When Volkswagen produced its first commercially successful vehicle, the Volkswagen Beetle, in 1938, it wasn’t designed to be a sports sensation. However, the Beetle was such a hit that it sold over 21 million specimens throughout its long production run. In 1955 VW produced the Karmann Ghia: its genesis was the brainchild of the German coachbuilding house Karmann, with styling by Italy’s Carrozzeria Ghia. Since its debut in 1955, the Karmann Ghia sold over four hundred thousand cars till its end of production in 1974. Our subject car is a 1974 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe in mostly original condition with just 10219 miles.
Our subject Karmann Ghia is an older restoration that was repainted early in its life in the current red. It sits on a set of vintage Western rims, which are wrapped in Michelin ZX Classic rubber. Throughout its nineteen years of production history, the Karmann Ghia has barely changed from its original design and components; however, one of the notable changes was the standard addition of disc brakes to the front in 1971. The front luxury leather seats have been recovered. The doors have the original trim and molding still intact. Our subject car has had modern upgrades installed, such as a modern FM tuner and cassette player and dual speakers where the rear seats would’ve been.
Volkswagen initially produced the Karmann Ghia with a 1.2L engine producing 34hp, with later years featuring different capacities and variations. This Karmann Ghia features a reportedly original 1.6L engine—their highest-rated engine—coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission that produces 60hp.
The '60s was a time for peace and love. What's the perfect machine to replicate this feeling? Volkswagen and its line of air-cooled machines. Built to evoke the sense of traveling further and freely, being behind the wheel of a '60s Volkswagen is an experience to treasure, especially if it's this 1963 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe we have today.
Regarded by many as one of Volkswagen's most aesthetically pleasing offerings, the Karmann Ghia stood as a distinct departure from the Beetle's appearance while sharing more commonalities beneath the surface than differences. This harmonious creation emerged from the collaborative endeavors of three notable entities, each contributing to the vehicle's name. Volkswagen, the driving force behind the project, entrusted the esteemed Italian design firm Carrozzeria Ghia with shaping the car's form. In turn, coachbuilding company Ghia took on the responsibility of constructing this automobile, further cementing its reputation as a prominent player of that era. Today, we present the opportunity to acquire a 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, a vehicle that embodies this intriguing history. The current owner attests to a comprehensive refinishing process, encompassing both its exterior and interior, resulting in a renewed visual allure. Imposing an even more irresistible proposition, the odometer indicates a mere 17,000 miles of travel, a testament to its remarkably low usage over the years.
In the 1970s, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia represented a unique blend of style and performance, capturing the essence of freedom and unity that characterized the era. This 1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible exemplifies that spirit with its timeless design and open-top driving experience. With a reported 125,000 miles, this classic car has been well-traveled and cherished by its previous owners. From leisurely weekend cruises to spirited drives, this Karmann Ghia is ready to provide an enjoyable and stylish ride for its lucky new owner.
The humble Volkswagen Beetle can mean many things to many people. Originally conceived as simple, almost utilitarian transport for the masses, its timeless design and dependable reliability catapulted the VW Bug into a much more significant role. You’ll find some Beetles setting world-record auction prices, others tearing up the race tracks in historic events, and still more being used as blank canvases for those who like to harness the many customization options on offer. There are, of course, many different body styles of Volkswagen Beetle on offer, too. And one of the most desirable is pictured for sale here. This 1978 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is a perfect example of just how wide the “people’s car” appeal stretches. Having undergone a mild restoration with multiple new parts reported, this VW Beetle Convertible is ready to make waves in the classic car scene.
