The Land Rover Defender has gained a name for itself all over the world as a supremely capable off-roader. With a glorious history dating back to 1948’s Land Rover Series 1, the classic Defender maintains much of its ancestor’s styling cues. However, it’s vastly different under the skin. The Defender name came about in 1991 with two variants. The 90 variant was a short wheelbase two-door affair, while the 110 sported four doors and a longer wheelbase. The numbers do refer to the wheelbase size in inches. So, this 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 has a 90-inch (approximate) wheelbase and is a two-door machine. The current owner tells us it’s received regular servicing and maintenance and a more powerful engine.
This 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 cuts a fine figure in its white suit, punctuated by its 18-inch custom black wheels. Furthermore, the vehicle sports a partial roof rack, plus ladders to access this feature. We also see that the headlamps have been upgraded to more modern units. The interior of this 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 features Lecari leather front seats and rear jump seats, plus Exmoor trim. Then, there’s an Alcantara headliner, functional air conditioning, and a custom Boss touchscreen head unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. We also spy some upgraded speakers, as well as what appears to be a subwoofer in the rear. But, in other ways, this 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 is very classic, with its wind-up windows and old-school analog gauge cluster.
This 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 has received an interesting engine upgrade. Beneath its purposeful-looking hood lurks a recently reconditioned Rover 4.6L V8 engine. This will no doubt provide more power than the turbodiesel engines that this era of Defender came with from the Land Rover factory. Another neat feature is the automatic gearbox in this 1997 Land Rover Defender 90, making driving easier for those who aren’t accustomed to stick shifts. Don’t worry; it’s still four-wheel drive and has a transfer case. It also has new brakes and rotors, suspension, and springs.

That’s why you can easily see similarities between a 1948 Series I and this 66,000-mile 1994 Land Rover Defender 110 that’s up for sale today. This six-seat vehicle is thus a great way to explore the myriad trails across America, in a vehicle that’s built for the purpose.
