Overview of 2016 BMW I8 For Sale by Owner

BMW’s futuristic i8 caused quite a stir way back in 2013 when it launched. Here was a vehicle that, if you digitally removed its wheels and wheel arches, would look like a spaceship. In fact, the i8 is the result of BMW’s Vision EfficientDynamics concept car basically being put into production almost as-is. Spearheading the start of the ‘i’ sub-brand of cars from BMW, the i8 remains not just a curio, but a historically significant model in the Bavarian automaker’s long legacy. Today’s 2016 BMW i8 represents one way to enjoy a slice of that fine cake. This Utah-based machine has traveled just under 47,000 miles so far and comes with the Tera World Package.

Exterior and Interior

This 2016 BMW i8 might look black on the exterior, but it’s actually a very dark shade of gray called Sophisto Gray Metallic. This, paired with the car’s Frozen Gray accents and 20-inch light alloy wheels result in a machine that will definitely have you glancing back at as you walk away from it. The car’s piercing laser headlamps are equipped with cornering lights as well, which is useful as you sit rather low down in its sporty passenger cabin. On to that cabin, then, which is a 2+2 affair since this is an i8 coupe. It’s got a Natural Dalbergia Brown interior with Carum Spice Gray cloth textile accents, and an Anthracite headliner. There’s a set of front bucket seats, a heads-up display, a Harman/Kardon speaker system, a leather-wrapped gear knob, and a sport steering wheel. The car’s infotainment system runs BMW’s iDrive user interface and feels no different to that in any other BMW, so you don’t have to scale a steep learning curve. As for the rear seats, they’re best suited to children or as additional luggage storage, but be thankful for them, because convertible i8s skip them entirely.

Engine

This 2016 BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid. It’s got an interesting powertrain, too. Behind the passenger cabin lies a turbo 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine and a 6-speed automatic gearbox to drive the rear wheels. The front wheels are also powered, but by an electric motor. The car can drive on the electric motor alone for up to 15 miles, at up to 75 miles per hour. Or, it can call upon both powertrains to give you 0-60 performance in less than 5 seconds, and a 155mph top speed.
