Lucid Motors is one of the new crop of EV-only companies in the United States. Established in 2007, they would debut their first model nine year later, with the Air executive sedan. Built in Arizona, Lucid’s sole model is the Air, although an SUV is in the pipeline. As a direct competitor to Tesla’s Model S, why not take a chance on this 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance that bears a mere 174 miles since new? It’s a brand-new car that you can buy right now, no waiting lists to contend with, and it’s the top variant too, reportedly #420 of just 520 made.
The Lucid Air looks highly futuristic, much like something you’d expect to see in a movie set in the future. Cloaked in an Infinite Black exterior, this 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance rolls on 21-inch Aero Dream wheels shod with high performance tires. The side silhouette showcases just how slippery this car is, enabling it to cut through the air with a drag coefficient of 0.20. The Air comes in at 195.9 inches in length and is 76.3 inches wide, but you wouldn’t guess it from the pictures. Taking a peek at the underbelly, it’s all covered and smoothened to reduce disrupting the air flow beneath the car, once again increasing efficiency. The LUCID lettering spreads across the rear valance, and there’s a smattering of stylized AIR badges on the car. If there was one word to describe the Dream Santa Monica interior, it would be minimalistic. You won’t find acres of fussily-arranged buttons to contend with. Instead, there’s a large portrait-oriented touchscreen in the center console that controls infotainment, climate control, vehicle settings, the electrically adjustable heated massage seats up front, and even the doors. A second screen stretches from ahead of the driver to the center, and acts as the instrument cluster as well as readout for infotainment information. You’ve got a decent 10-speaker sound system, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth mobile phone integration, multiple cameras and more. The flat-bottomed two-spoke steering wheel also has a few controls and scroll wheels on it. Rear passengers can enjoy heated seats and rear air vents too, as well as plenty of space. Gaze upwards and there’s a full-length glass roof to enjoy.
There’s no engine in the conventional sense. Instead, this 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance, being the top-tier trim, packs dual motors for a mind-boggling total of 1,111hp of power, and 1,025lb-ft of peak torque. This is enough for a 2.5 second sprint from rest to sixty, and top speed is electronically capped at 168mph, although Lucid’s internal testing has revealed that this spec can blast past 230mph. The 112kWh battery pack in the Dream Edition Performance is rated for up to 450 miles, and you’ve got 300kW DC charging capability, plus 19.2kW AC charging capability on board.
