2020 marked a significant year for Bentley, ushering in a new era of hybrid powered Bentayga SUVs. So, the 2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid reflected the British automaker's swift pursuit of electrifying its lineup now that electrification reigns supreme over gas-powered, internal combustion cars. In an attempt to 'go green,' Bentley offered the Bentayga (Hybrid) in a detuned 3.0-liter V6 mated to an electric motor, collectively producing a healthy 443 horsepower. Still, the Bentayga Hybrid couples enough power to accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in a modest 5.2 seconds, which may not be as impressive as the hybrid’s fuel economy, now delivering 17 (combined) miles to the gallon, an upgrade over the 6-liter W12’s gas-guzzling 13 (MPG). Nonetheless, the 2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid retailed at a justifiable $168,000, which could easily surpass the $200,000 mark with all the options ticked.
The 2015 Geneva Motor Show revealed Bentley’s first take on the luxury SUV market, surprising its critics. The Bentayga – named after the rugged terrains of the Canary Islands – struck a perfect balance between astonishingly fast speeds, timelessly modern looks, and a soft-touch leather-adorned interior with an all-terrain capability. Still, a VW-group-sourced 6-liter W12 engine came as standard across all initial models before an economical V8 diesel, the first in a Bentley, was made available in 2016. A year later, though, Bentley upped the ante by introducing the bespoke, tailor-made ‘Mulliner’ trims, establishing a new league of luxury SUVs. Eventually, a performance-oriented V8-powered Bentayga spec was launched, satisfying those who ached more speed. The same year, however, marked a significant shift towards a more sustainable future as Bentley introduced a hybridized Bentayga, with the first deliveries taking place in late 2019.
Being a hybrid, the Bentayga packs a detuned 3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. Together with a 13-kWh electric motor, the Bentayga Hybrid develops a humble 443 horsepower and 516 lb-ft torques via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The power is routed to all four wheels, propelling the SUV from 0 to 60 mph in a relaxed 5.2 seconds. Flat-out, the 2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid would achieve a decent top speed of 158 mph, which is less impressive than its commendable fuel economy. And so, it returns a respectable 17 miles to the gallon (combined), coupling an additional 16 miles of trouble-free, all-electric range. At 5,790 pounds, the Bentayga Hybrid falls slightly short of a charging bull's weight but without sacrificing the tranquility and serenity of an electric oasis.
Behind its electric symphony lies an interior adorned with high-quality, perforated leather and a host of comfort features – to an unmatched extent. So, soft-touch, high-quality leather outlines the cockpit, carpeting the seats, roof, door panels, and the dash. Luckily, exquisitely polished wood inlays are present – in colors that match your yacht's starboard – that hint of classic, old-fashioned grandeur, a compliment that works well with the stainless steel and metallic knobs and controls peppered throughout the composed cabin. Also, a panoramic sunroof opens the Bentayga to an uninterrupted sky, closely followed by the (optional) ambient lighting for a customizable atmosphere. Still, Bentley’s approach to modern luxury continues towards the back as well, treating its (rear) occupants with a plethora of goodies, including (two-zone) climate control, a rear infotainment/entertainment system, heated and cooled seats, and – of course – a premium (NAIM) sound system, to enjoy the world in refined comfort.
Outside, the 2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid flaunts a minimalist yet bold exterior that turns heads wherever it goes. So, it graces smooth, quite defined lines that run along the sides, especially up front, culminating in the Bentley's signature matrix grill. The grille dominates the front fascia, flanked by crystal-like LED headlights, adding a touch of modern sophistication. Meanwhile, muscular folds integrate the side, closely followed by the 22-inch five-spoke wheels clad in sporty Pirelli P Zero. A prominent shoulder emphasizes a confident stance, complementing a roof-mounted spoiler at the rear. Eventually, a set of tailpipes emerge at the back along with the signature Bentley tail lights, which elegantly house the iconic ‘flying B’ emblem.
To bridge the gap between world-class performance and environmental consciousness, Bentley sought the help of a clever, hybridized powertrain. So, the Bentayga Hybrid highlights three modes – Hybrid, Hold, and EV Drive – that intelligently manage technology for optimal efficiency without compromising the signature Bentley tranquility. Additionally, a plethora of safety features ensure maximum occupant safety, including blind spot monitoring, heads-up display, night vision, lane departure and lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking, and pedestrian detection. But then again, such features come with a hefty price – as do all things with luxury.
Back when it was launched, the 2020 Bentley Bentayga Hybrid came with a tag worth $168,000 (starting). Dare add in options – including the Mulliner Driving Specification, Bentley’s Dynamic Ride ($5,180) premium sound system ($4,924), hands-free tailgate ($990), contrast stitching ($2,080), and roof rails ($1,130) – and you’ll venture way past the $200,000 mark. That said, used Bentayga Hybrids may cost between $95,000 and $115,000, depending on prior ownership, mileage, and condition. Dream of owning one?
