Where luxury sedans have become extremely common in this saturated market, the concept of luxury SUVs is still somewhat new in the industry. This is the area Bentley intended to focus on with the release of its Bentayga's in 2015. These powerfully constructed vehicles were recognized as crossover SUVs with the ability to off-road while simultaneously providing the luxury of comfort. This concept was relatively new in the industry and was quickly picked up by other luxury competitors like Rolls-Royce with the introduction of the 2019 Cullinan, paving the way for future SUVs. The 2019 Bentley Bentayga V8 became successful and is one of the reasons it is still in operation in 2024.
Although Bentley came into the market listing themselves as a luxurious car producer with the Continental and other 3-Litre models, they had a natural ability to produce performance-based vehicles due to immaculate manufacturing focused on advanced engineering. This was evident in the 24-hour performance-based race in Le Mans that has been held every year since 1923. Bentley’s manufacturing allowed it to win and hold the title in the mid-1920s, providing a glimpse of the aggression their engines held. After the separation from Vickers, the company was no longer reliant on BMW-manufactured engines and therefore decided on a business model focusing on their ability to produce luxurious cars that could stand out. When Bentayga was first released back in 2015, cars like the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover were dominating the industry. However, these companies were focused on performance, with their aims being to produce excellent off-roading machinery with strong axle movement. This meant that there was a clear gap in the crossover SUV industry that could be fulfilled with luxury amenities and super-comfort, using a 2019 Bentley Bentayga V8.
Amongst the four variants of Bentayga, the V8 was the talisman with its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged engine generating horsepower in excess of 542 hp. Where the Mulliner was built and focused only on luxury, the 2019 V8 was a performance-induced car with an engine potent enough to allow the car to accelerate rapidly from 0-100 kmph in only 4.4 seconds. Keep in mind that the car weighed over 5400 lbs. and moving a beast this heavy and steadily maintaining a top speed of 180 mph means that the car was packing some serious strength. This can be credited to the 568 lb-ft torque presented by the V8 which was in turn supported by the eight-speed automatic transmission for an ever-lasting exquisite road-grip. This Bentley production was perhaps the only one made for off-roading as its previous versions were better for longer road-trips than an off the road one. The all-wheel-drive option in the Bentley V8 allows spectacular road-grip in rugged conditions providing all-season support to the Bentley driver.
The USP (Unique Selling Point) of luxury cars has been the fact that they have been made customizable by default, to allow the consumer to recreate the car with his imagination. Bentley, much like its competitors like Rolls-Royce, offers an extensive customization option including the upholstery, veneers, lifestyle accessories, and contrast stitching. This allowed the consumer to add unique leather upholstery, trim options, exotic consoles, and stitching colors resembling their imagination concept. Where the adjustable interior had several options, the in-built features of the car had to represent that of a luxurious car, and it did not disappoint. Fine wood veneers lasting from the dashboard to the door panels aren’t something new with Bentley cars, the ergonomically designed seats for up to 5 passengers was a definite upgrade from its own previous model. There was no notable increase in the surface area of the car but the 2019 Bentayga V8 saw a better placement of seats in order to utilize the heating and ventilation capacity of the leather seats. However, the most noteworthy improvement was the technology upgrades including the safety features. The infotainment for the rear-seat as well, so massive improvements with larger touchscreens and more responsive touch. The connectivity options expanded on the Bluetooth connectivity as well as providing wireless charging, previously omitted from production. On the other hand, the safety features saw a massive bump as the car now included Blind-spot monitoring, surround-view cameras, and rear-cross traffic alerts in an attempt to reduce the chances of any potential accidents. The driving-assist features including the lane assist now became much more accurate while the pedestrian detection technology showed massive signs of improvements as Bentley doubled-down on its Research & Development.
The earlier models of the car weren’t as successful but in 2019 when the competition intensified with bringing in notable improvementsBentley’s engine production and luxurious suiting has seldom disappointed however, their utilities and technology were a little behind with these Bentayga variants. Nonetheless, a luxury crossover SUV powering a twin-turbocharged V8 engine made available at the price range of $75,000 - $95,000 is still a steal. However, buying an older variant of a car could be challenging as you might not be aware of damages the car may be packing.
