After a long and successful 15 year production, the long awaited next generation Continental GT finally entered production in 2018 and went on sale in the US in 2019. The all new Continental featured a complete redesign both inside and out as well as an entirely redeveloped drivetrain. Not to mention it was built on an all new MSB platform shared with the Panamera, sending the old D1 Phaeton platform to a well deserved retirement. Thanks to all the improvements, the 2020 Continental GT is faster, more comfortable, lighter, and more advanced than the previous generation and not by a small margin. And that was reflected in its sales as it outsold the Bentayga in 2019, becoming the first model to do that since the SUV entered production. Used prices reflect the demand as well as the 2020 Continental GT has hardly depreciated at all. But before we cover all the details explaining what makes it so amazing, take a look at those currently for sale at Exotic Car Trader.
The third generation Continental GT had huge shoes to fill thanks to just how extraordinary the original had been. Let’s just remember that Bentley that came before it were built decades old platforms using even older engines. And we have to consider that the Continental GT was an automotive marvel when it came out, outperforming every Aston Martin and stepping into the Ferrari territory all the while being just as luxurious as a Rolls Royce. The third generation, which is the first all new model since the original, really had to go above and beyond if it wanted to make the same impact. And the sales figures prove that it did as despite the grand SUV trend, it outsold the Bentayga in 2019 with nearly 7,000 units made while the 2020 Continental GT sold in over 3,000 examples. Since the model was still virtually brand new in 2020, it saw no updates apart from the addition of a convertible GTC, and quite frankly, no updates are required even today.
One of the biggest highlights of the 2020 Continental GT interior is the three sided infotainment assembly. While driving, the driver can choose to display the main infotainment screen making the cabin look modern and improving the functionality. Te next second, that screen can be replaced with three gauges reminiscent of Bentley dashboards from the ‘90s and early ‘00s. And if that’s too tacky, the third option is simple wood trim without any gauges which blends in with the rest of the dashboard. Another great thing is that the gauge cluster is now entirely digital and doubles as an additional infotainment screen, navigation or OBC so the main screen can remain hidden at all times. Extensive ambient lighting makes the interior look even more attractive while the cabin design in general looks three generations ahead of the previous model. The 2020 Continental GT also gets new driver aids like night vision, emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control just to name a few. And of course, massaging, heated and cooled seats are standard. The interior is also more bespoke than ever as there is little to no parts sharing with VW and Audi and most of the switches are made of knurled metal. Overall, the interior is nothing short of breathtaking when compared to any car on the market today.
The overall 2020 Continental GT design has very obviously evolved from the previous model. However, that doesn’t take anything away from it, on the contrary. The design has roots while also being far ahead of its time as it should be with a Bentley. Starting at the front, the Continental still features oval headlights only now the inside is lined with cut Swarovski crystals that even without the rest of the car look like art. Tail lights got the same crystal treatment so the drivers behind you can admire the attention to the detail that comes with a Continental GT. The grille had grown bigger as is the trend but it doesn’t look obnoxious by any means. And the Continental is now lower and more streamlined, it’s also wider and more muscular than ever. Walking behind the Continental doesn’t disappoint either with huge oval exhausts coming from within the bumper and an angled diffuser giving it a sporty yet elegant look. Ultimately, the 2020 Continental GT is by all accounts among the best looking cars in production today easily rivaling even Aston Martin.
One of the biggest selling points of the original Continental GT was its outright performance and as soon as it came out it became the fastest Bentley ever made. So, the 2020 Continental GT can only be faster, much faster. The all new W12 engine makes 635 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to push the 2020 Continental GT 0-60 in just 3.6 seconds despite its 4,965 lbs. That said, even the weight is pretty impressive as it’s over 100 lbs lighter than the previous model while having a much stiffer chassis and more technology. And of course, we can’t forget the 207 mph top speed which puts it ahead of the Ferrari 488 GTB, the McLaren GT, and on par with the Aston Martin DB11. Furthermore, the 2020 Continental GT gets active anti roll bars and a 48 volt active damping system to keep the heavy body neutral through corners and make the GT feel light. Another novelty is the sport mode which puts at least 83% of torque to the rear wheels making it essentially rear wheel drive and reducing understeer to near zero. The 2020 Continental GT is on a whole new level in terms of handling over the older model and puts it very close to the DB11.
A brand new Continental GT costs the same as it did in 2020 with a starting price of $235,000 which will quickly cross $250,000 after a few option boxes are ticked off. And while used 2020 Continental GT prices are lower, it’s nothing extraordinary. A used 2020 Continental GT still goes for an average price of $200,000 provided it has less than 10,000 miles. Those with 20,000 to 30,000 miles on them will dip down to $180,000 at most. Although that’s a nice discount over a new one, the prices are far from reaching their full depreciation, at least judging by the previous model.
The 2020 Continental GT provides one of the most unique experiences in the automotive world today. No other car can match its levels of luxury and performance at the same time. Moreover, Rolls Royce is the only manufacturer at the moment that can match Bentley’s attention to detail but even a Ghost costs almost double. And ultimately, there is hardly an alternative to a Continental GT.
