The Volkswagen Type 2 was Volkswagen’s second mass production vehicle, after the popular Beetle. Introduced for 1950, the Type 2 came in panel van, minibus and pickup truck variants. Soon, it became immensely popular in its own right, most notably as a symbol of the Sixties. Subsequently, the name changed to Transporter, and it’s a name that we see to this day. However, few today will make the connection between the two. For many, the Volkswagen Type 2, Microbus, Kombi or bus is its own vehicle, and a fine classic too. Here, we’ve got a 1965 Volkswagen Bus of the 21-window variety, for sale in Elk Grove California after undergoing a full rotisserie restoration. That makes it an excellent turn-key classic that you can drive straight away.
The full restoration undergone by this 1965 Volkswagen Bus includes its two tone color theme of Velvet Green and Ice White. The truck looks pristine, thanks to components such as new wheels, new tires, new windows and even new belly pans. Of course, its most defining feature is its friendly face; two bug-eyed headlamps flanking a large Volkswagen emblem, while two pop-out windows act as the front windshield. Along the side, it’s got dual hinged doors for access to the main passenger cabin (some variants had sliding doors). At the rear, we see the engine compartment door and taillamps, creating a simplistic yet smart outlook when paired with the bumper in white. The interior of this 1965 Volkswagen Bus is said to be a new stock interior, and offers comfortable fabric seating. In fact, the rearmost bench is pictured still wrapped in its protective plastic packaging! At the front, you’ve got a pristine white dashboard with a few instruments, including an analog clock. Other features in the passenger cabin include the roll-back sunroof, white basket up front that doubles as a cup holder and of course, the opera or Alpine windows running along the sides of the vehicle above the main windows.
This 1965 Volkswagen Bus uses a new air-cooled 1.6-liter flat-four mounted in the tail to power the rear wheels via a new 4-speed manual gearbox. The van has also received new stock suspension and new stock brakes to ensure that the driving experience is close to brand-new.
