Background Story of this 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Overview of 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass For Sale by Owner

Named after a fighter jet which was in turn named after a nautical swashbuckling sword, the Oldsmobile Cutlass is well-known for being one of those American stalwarts of the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. For much of its life, the Cutlass was a personal luxury car, competing with the likes of the Ford T-Bird and the rest of the class. Today’s 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass is one fine example of this, and it’s from the third generation. We’re told that this 52,767-mile car has received several aftermarket parts, a rebuilt gearbox and packs a 350ci Rocket V8. Plus, you’ve got a spare wheel, the original owner’s manual and even the original Oldsmobile Emissions Control manual included with the sale! So if you wish to own this Cutlass, snap it up from its home in Floral Park, New York at the earliest!

Exterior and Interior

Wearing a muted yellow shade of paint, this 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass looks very presentable indeed. It’s got that traditional American luxury car appearance, with prominent overhangs, a sizable overall length, dual headlamps and chrome bumpers. This example also has aftermarket alloy wheels for a kind of retro-mod vibe. The tan interior of this 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass features light beige seating for four adults, air conditioning, a full gauge cluster with tachometer, wood trim and an aftermarket radio. Interestingly, you’ll find the clock within the tachometer itself! Meanwhile, the Oldsmobile-branded radio unit aims to look like an old-school push-button type but packs modern tech for better media compatibility. Opening the trunk reveals a reasonably spacious cargo area, with a spare wheel in situ.

Engine

This 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass has the famous 350ci Rocket V8 under the hood. It’s been fed by a 4-barrel carburetor and paired with a rebuilt Muncie 4-speed M20 manual transmission. The drivetrain also benefits from an aftermarket clutch kit, a resurfaced flywheel and a rebuilt driveshaft with aftermarket yoke, universal joints and balance. There’s also aftermarket left and right engine mounts, an aftermarket engine oil pan gasket, and an aftermarket battery. The car is rear-wheel drive, and we’re told that the rear differential’s pinion seal is also aftermarket.

VERIFIED SELLER
PENDING SALE
$21,499
SOLD

Available from 1961 until 1999, Oldsmobile’s Cutlass has got to be one of this iconic American brand’s longer-running nameplates. The name Cutlass is derived from a fighter jet of the late Forties, the Vought F7U Cutlass. The aircraft in turn was named after the nautical sword known as a cutlass. So, there’s a bit of nomenclature history for you, since it’s likely that you, your parents, and grandparents have encountered an Olds Cutlass at some point. Today’s 1964 Oldsmobile Cutlass F85 Restomod is a second-generation example that’s received a few upgrades to make it nicer for regular driving duties. These include a reupholstered leather interior, air conditioning and an aftermarket stereo system. You also get the original owner’s manual with the sale of this Redmond-based American classic.
