Background Story of this 1975 Excalibur Series III

Overview of 1975 Excalibur Series III For Sale by Owner

The story of Excalibur is interesting. Initially styled by Brooks Stevens for Studebaker, Stevens subsequently formed a company to produce the cars himself. Built in Wisconsin, it’s estimated that over 3,500 examples of this neo-classic automobile were made until 1990, even though the company folded in 1986 and was subsequently revived for a short time thereafter. Excalibur’s unique selling point was to offer classic 1920s and 1930s styling paired with modern mechanicals and creature comforts at the time. Today, we’ve got one of these curious cars for sale, a 1975 Excalibur Series III Phaeton from Edgerton, Wisconsin, with 56,178 miles on the clock. Let us tell you more about this car and why you should snap it up if you’ve got an eye for, and a desire to own unconventional pieces of American automotive history.

Exterior and Interior

This 1975 Excalibur Series III Phaeton might look like a 1920s Mercedes-Benz SSK because that’s the look that Brooks Stevens was going for with the Excalibur. So, it’s got external headlamp pods, running boards, prominent wheel arches, white-striped tires, wire-effect wheels and of course, that opulent silhouette. The body is fiberglass with aluminum panels, and the car sports a modern convertible hood too, making it easier to drive in hot sun or rain. You’ll also notice some components such as Volkswagen Beetle rear lighting clusters which add turn signals and reversing lamps to this otherwise vintage-styled car. The interior of this 1975 Excalibur Series III Phaeton features a real wood dashboard, tan leather seats, and relatively modern convenience features such as air conditioning. It’s a four-seat affair with a rear bench plus two individually adjustable front seats, and feels quite modern as a result. You’ve also got plenty of instrumentation which once again, is not commonly found in cars from the 1920s and 1930s. As for luggage, there’s enough space in a compartment styled to look like an externally-mounted trunk.

Engine

Powering this 1975 Excalibur Series III Phaeton is a massive 454ci Chevy V8, hooked up to a Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed automatic gearbox. The car is rear-wheel drive as you’d expect. Braking is via front power-assisted discs and rear drums. So, it’s actually quite easy to drive.

1971 Triumph TR6

VERIFIED SELLER
PENDING SALE
$34,997

With its roots in 1885, the Triumph Motor Company of Great Britain is one of the country’s most well-known sports car makers. They’re known for a fine line-up of TR models which are sports cars, typically open-topped ones called Roadsters. Sadly, Triumph went bust in 1984, but the assets are currently owned by BMW. While the Bavarian automaker shows no plans to resurrect the brand, much of their historic production still remains alive. This 1971 Triumph TR6 is one such example and it’s for sale in Greenville, South Carolina. With its 2.5-liter straight six, convertible top cover and original owner’s manual, this is a fine catch for someone who wishes to sample the British Roadster lifestyle. And let us tell you, it’s quite an addictive driving experience!

$26,999

If you want a German classic car with some modern conveniences, a V8 under the hood and a fine legacy, you can’t go amiss by choosing a Mercedes-Benz SL from the R107 era. Over 300,000 were made between 1971 and 1989, of which two thirds came to North America. The R107 redefined the term boulevard cruiser, with its performance, luxury interior and driving manners over long distances. If that sounds like your cup of tea, we have this 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL for sale right now. It’s from Scottsdale, Arizona, and has covered just over 71,000 miles so far. It’s also got a smooth M177 5.6-liter V8 under the hood.

1969 Oldsmobile 442

PENDING SALE
$82,000

Now here’s a legend of the muscle car scene, the fearsome Oldsmobile 442. Made between 1964 and 1980 as a proper performance machine, it was well-known for decimating nearly all comers at the drag strip. The 442 was potent out of the box, but it could also be tuned with near unlimited scope. Today, those who seek a 442 do so not only for its performative capabilities but its style as well. That’s why we are proud to offer this Torrance-based second-generation 1969 Oldsmobile 442 for sale. With under 107,000 miles, it’s definitely been enjoyed but has so much more to give. Of course when you’ve got a 400ci V8 under the hood and a stick shift to control it with, you don’t want to end journeys too quickly…
