



The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is a well-known car in film and TV. Later models appeared as the star-car for the cult 80s classic, Knight Rider. But, well before that, the Smokey and the Bandit franchise immortalized the second-generation Firebird Trans Am Special Edition. When a Starlight Black Trans Am Special Edition was used in the 1976 movie it became highly sought after for both fans and enthusiasts. And so—much like our subject car—black and gold Trans Am Special Editions soon coined the "Bandit Edition" nickname. With better performance, a more powerful engine, and more high-end interior options than the standard Firebird, the Trans Am is the Pontiac Firebird's big brother. The example you see here appears to be in remarkable condition, with just one owner, 9850 original miles, and the car's original build sheet included.
Possibly the most imposing feature of this 1979 Pontiac Trans Am Bandit Edition is its signature Starlight Black paint with special stripes and emblems in gold — not to mention the iconic Firebird hood decal. This Special Edition includes a hatch removable roof and gold cast-aluminum wheels which add to the car's stunning exterior. The leather interior is Camel Tan in color. The rest of the cabin includes factory air-conditioning, an AM/FM radio, power locks and windows, and rear window defroster. There are also special interior appointments in gold that give a timeless look to the dashboard as a limited-edition feature.
This "Bandit" Special Edition utilizes a 6.6L (403cid) L80 V8 engine. It delivers power to the wheels via an automatic transmission, while a limited-slip differential controls traction. The car for sale was also outfitted with a special handling package to facilitate taking this Trans Am to its limits. It also features power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes to keep the power in check.

Pontiac, one of those great American brands that is no more, is something of a legend. Between 1926 and 2010, they’ve given us plenty of great nameplates, some truly awesome muscle cars, potent pony cars and flamboyant full-size sedans. One of their key offerings in that last segment between 1954 and 1966 was the Star Chief. This was initially a top trim package for the Chieftain model before becoming a separate model. Finding a Star Chief isn’t easy because these vehicles were never intended to be collectibles. That’s despite over 203,000 being made in 1955, the year from which this 1955 Pontiac Star Chief hails.
