Kit cars are a more economical way of owning an exotic classic that is hard to find or has become too expensive for most people to buy. The VW Beetle has always been a popular base used by kit car makers thanks to its versatility and easy availability. The Porsche 356 was closely related to the VW Beetle and shared mechanical components with it. The 356’s designer was inspired by a supercharged Beetle Cabriolet he had at the end of WWII and wanted to build a fast rear-engine, air-cooled, 4-cylinder, rear-wheel-drive car. The 356 was introduced in 1948 and produced (with changes) till the mid-60s. In one and a half decades of production, less than 77,000 356s are said to have been built, contributing to its desirability as a collector’s car. The 365 A (which was the model made from 1955-1959) has become a popular car for creating replicas of (such as this one, which is labeled as a 1958 model).
Exterior and Interior
This 356 replica is built on a 1973 Beetle chassis by Classic Motor Cars of Miami (as reported by the current owner). It has a black fiberglass body and brown upholstery with a diamond stitch design on the seats. The wooden shifter knob and rim of the steering match the upholstery. There are pockets stitched into the door cards, providing storage space for smaller items. The owner states that this replica has authentic Porsche gauges. The front seats have been fitted with black lap belts for safety. The hood/front trunk is held down by period-style brown leather straps. While this wasn’t fitted to the original 356s, it does look good on this car. While there is no mention of a stereo system, there do appear to be two speakers fitted into the upholstery of the front footwell. A full brown tonneau cover is also included to protect the interior from the elements. The twin exhausts have square chrome tips, which look quite modern.
Engine
The 356A was offered with several 1.3L, 1.5L, and 1.6L engine options and a 4-speed manual. This car is reported to have a 1.5L engine from the 1973 Beetle (which was rated for 50PS from the factory). It has a new single carburetor, a new alternator, and a new front wiring harness. There are also four new tires and shocks.
As the predecessor of the 911, and the first production car by Porsche, there’s a lot of history behind the 356, and it’s no surprise that there are people around the world who continue to find ways to pay homage to what is an iconic piece of motoring history. Classic Motor Carriages’ 1987 Porsche 356 Speedster Replica is one of them. Built to maintain the original Porsche design on the road, this car retains the original vehicle’s appearance and features, with some tasteful enhancements. Still, it has a Porsche heart keeping it going, and with only over 11,100 miles on the clock, you know that this is a car that will keep on going.
The first ever production car from iconic German automaker Porsche was the 356. It was made between 1948 and 1965, and was the brainchild of Ferry Porsche, son of Ferdinand Porsche. Over 76,000 were made, and today, it’s estimated that approximately half of that contingent survives. However, getting your hands on an original 356 is quite tough, not to mention expensive. These cars regularly move for six-figure sums of money. That’s why replicas are a great way to get in on the action if you really want a 356, but aren’t too fussed about originality. Here, we have a 1956 Porsche 356A Convertible Replica that’s reportedly built in 1969. The work was completed by Hicks VW Services, because the Porsche 356 and Volkswagen Beetle have some commonalities.
