Every now and then, we at ECT are tasked to handle the sale of a car that’s been owned by a star. That’s a right royal honor to us, and today’s car is one that comes with documented proof that the first owner of this 1976 Rolls-Royce Corniche Coupe was none other than Cassius Clay Jr, popularly known as Muhammad Ali. When the world’s greatest boxer wasn’t floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee, it seems he liked to roll around in a car from one of the world’s greatest luxury automakers. This 1976 Corniche is from the Corniche II generation, and it wears 73,776 miles on its stately wheels. The seller says that it’s currently used for special occasions and charity events, and he has photos and documentation to validate its special history, as it’s considered a Muhammad Ali collectible. The car is said to have undergone an older restoration, and has received some recent maintenance.
Exterior and Interior
The design of a Rolls-Royce is unmistakable, and this 1976 Rolls-Royce Corniche Coupe showcases what Rolls-Royce was thinking in the 1970s. Iconic quad headlamps, ample chrome and smoothly sculpted lines are all presented in a timeless Coffee Brown paint job. A personalized plaque from the factory for Muhammad Ali reading “I Am The Greatest” is also reportedly present. Venture aboard the crème interior with brown detailing and it’s a Seventies time capsule, and one that you can really imagine Muhammad Ali coveting after a grueling round in the ring. Being a Rolls-Royce, you get plenty of creature comforts, including climate control and the original Clarion push button radio with tape deck, and equalizer tucked between the front seats. The Corniche is a full four seater, as proper adults can be accommodated in the rear seats, although at 6 feet 3 inches, Muhammad Ali would have preferred the front.
Engine
Bearing the iconic 6.75L Rolls-Royce-Bentley L410 OHV V8 under the hood grants this 1976 Rolls-Royce Corniche Fixed Roof with ample grunt to match its looks, albeit for a stately cruise rather than a track bruise. The engine is tuned to deliver ample torque rather than high-end power, and sends drive to the rear wheels via a 3-speed automatic with column shifter.
Today’s EVs and high-performance vehicles are all lovely to drive daily, but what about slowing down every now and then? This luxury British drop-top grand tourer is perfect for taking things slow, even though with a massive V8 under the hood, it won’t hold up traffic. Having received some new parts, this car could be yours to cherish for years to come. Let’s take a deeper dive into what this old-school British luxury car offers.
