The popular Humvee by AM General is arguably the most well-known military vehicle in the world. Thanks to Hollywood, as well as the news, almost anyone knows what a Humvee looks like. This popularity is further bolstered by the civilian variant, called the Hummer, which has starred in countless rap videos of the 2000s. Of course, the Hummer isn’t as tough and no-nonsense as the Humvee. That’s why when many Humvees reach the end of their military life, they celebrate retirement by receiving a comprehensive makeover prior to entry into civilian life. This 1985 AM General Humvee M998 is no different, and it’s up for sale with all maintenance up to date. So, if you want a capable off-roader that can really spice up your weekend trips into the wilderness, this might be the car for you.
Exterior and Interior
Wearing a pleasing shade of green, this 1985 AM General Humvee M998 could blend in with the surroundings if you’re traversing a leafy, wooded area. However, the sheer size and presence of the vehicle means that you’ll never lose it anywhere. There’s a rear cover top, massive off-road tires, and a front brush guard to keep the headlamps and indicators protected. Unlike some modded Humvees, this one comes with full doors as well, so you’ve got all-weather protection. Alternatively, you can remove the doors for an open-air experience. Inside, there are four seats and a very Military-styled interior. Don’t expect creature comforts such as dual-zone climate control or a premium sound system. However, there is a ventilation system with a blower fan. Behind the passenger compartment is plenty of space for your cargo. Furthermore, the interior can be customized to your liking, so you can do whatever you please. If you want air conditioning, a banging sound system, or even a BBQ grill, it’s your choice to make.
Engine
This 1985 AM General Humvee M998 packs a muscular 6.5L V8 under the hood, which drives all four wheels via an automatic gearbox. It isn’t a speed demon, as evidenced by the 60mph speedometer. However, it more than compensates for this with sheer off-road ability. There’s very little terrain that can’t be conquered by a skillful driver in one of these. Furthermore, it’s a very forgiving vehicle off-road; hence is a great tool with which to learn off-roading. Just be aware of its sheer size and the fact that you can’t throw it around carelessly.
Built for military service rather than civilian comfort, this 2002 AM General M1025A2 HMMWV is the sort of machine that makes almost anything else on the road look ordinary.
