The Mercedes-Benz SL might never have come to be, way back in the Fifties, if an American importer hadn’t suggested to the German manufacturer that they should make a street version of their 300 SL race car. The result was the 1954 300 SL, which brought the trademark gullwing doors and iconic shape, eyebrows over the wheels and all, to the American personal luxury car market. Fast forward to 2022, and the R232 generation has just been launched. Along the way, the R107, which ran for eighteen years between 1971 and 1989 was one of the most iconic. Loved by Hollywood and driven on and off screen by celebs of the day, this 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SL Roadster is your ticket to entering those glorious boulevard cruising times. It’s got 130,000 miles on the clock, but don’t let that dissuade you as the seller has a log of documents and maintenance records over the years to showcase that it’s been looked after.

The R107 generation was quite a departure from the W113 that preceded it. Gone were Sixties styling, in came Seventies design language. American-market cars sported the individual headlamps and elongated bumpers that were mandated due to safety regulations. This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SL Roadster wears a lovely blue exterior and rolls on reportedly original wheels that are wrapped in tires that are said to be five years old, but look decent as the vehicle apparently doesn’t get driven much. The chrome is reported to be original as well. Step aboard and you are greeted by a gray interior that’s said to have been redone around 2016, and there’s wood trim on the dash and center console too. An aftermarket Alpine radio and speakers have been installed, and there’s climate control plus the usual powered conveniences you’d expect from an Eighties Mercedes-Benz vehicle.

This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SL Roadster is powered by a 3.8L V8 engine with Bosch fuel injection that put out 155hp and 196lb-ft for US-market cars when new. Drive goes to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission, and this car has received a new battery this year.

Nothing says “old money” like an 80s Mercedes convertible. This fine example is a testament to that statement. The R107 SL Class was in production for nearly 2 decades between 1971 and 1989 (reportedly selling an incredible 300,000 units), and the 380SL was made in the early 80s. In the US market, it replaced the 450SL and was succeeded by the 560SL. It was essentially a 2-seater convertible version of the S Class, providing a delightful combination of driving pleasure and luxury. The S Class frequently gets credit for being the world leader in technological innovation, but few know that the SL was also a very influential model; inertia-reel seatbelts, though now standard on every car, were developed for and debuted in the R107 SL, with its comfort and safety advantages making it an industry trend quickly. Being an 80s Mercedes, the most important thing about this car is the unbeatable quality of engineering.
