While General Motors’ civilian takes on the legendary HMMWV, the Hummer H1, opened up the ownership possibilities to a whole host of enthusiasts, there’s another option for private parties to get a slice of military history. On offer is the chance to own a genuine National Guard-used 1986 AM General Humvee M998. Owned, used, and restored by the Massachusetts National Guard, this service-used Humvee is the ultimate addition to any military buff’s collection. Featuring a reported engine rebuild in 2008, a repainted exterior, and even a turret mounted at the rear, this 33,000-mile AM General Humvee could be yours.
The exterior of this 1986 AM General Humvee M998 National Guard is reported to have been repainted. It now sports a black exterior with green accents applied to the doors, hood, grille, and roof. In front of the grille is a flip-down protective bull bar, while there are LED light bars on the front and rear of the roof, plus additional LED rock lights installed on the bed. Flanked by a large American flag is the showpiece of this Humvee: a turret mounted atop the rear bed. Also included in the sale, but not photographed, are a set of soft doors. The interior features the standard controls you’d expect to find in this purpose-built military vehicle. The dashboard retains the various factory-installed warning tags, while a bank of gauges keeps track of crucial information such as fuel level, oil pressure, water temperature, speed, and battery voltage. For added comfort for the driver and front passenger, the front seats have been upgraded to items from a Jeep, while the rear seats remain original. Lastly, an AM/FM radio has been fitted for musical accompaniments next to the thunderous diesel roar of this off-road warrior.
Under the hood of this 1986 AM General Humvee is a 6.2-liter diesel V8. Likely having seen years of service as part of the National Guard fleet, the powerplant was rebuilt in 2008. Power is sent to all four wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, there’s a snorkel exhaust to aid in water crossings, and run-flat tires have been installed to ensure mobility is retained even in the most challenging situations.

Big, bold and ready to go anywhere at any time was the mantra of the legendary Humvee. Born on the battlefield, the Humvee was a useful tool that helped troops navigate the rough and tough environments around it. The modern day marketplace sees a host of Humvee’s up for grabs, and the common trend is most of them are now fine tuned to be soft, user friendly versions – the old utilitarian rough and tough simply making its way out. However, present today is a throwback to the rough and tough and takes shape with this 2008 American General Humvee M1123.
The Humvee is arguably the most distinguished and famous military vehicle in America’s history. Since its introduction by AM General in 1985, the Humvee has seen service on nearly every American military base, at home or abroad. Multiple variants have been produced, including the M998, which is a cargo/troop carrier. Once military Humvees serve their time, many of them receive a makeover of varying degrees before being adapted to civilian life. This particular 1986 AM General Humvee M998 is a great example of this trait, as it’s been done up to be a potent off-road machine. With just 23,409 miles on the clock, it’s as lightly run-in as you’d expect.
Let’s talk about the difference between the Hummer H1 and the AM General Humvee. Since the Humvee was primarily intended for military use, AM General did not initially have plans to create a more comfortable and modest variant of the truck. Thanks to Austrian and American celebrity Arnold Schwarzenegger, AM General was convinced to produce the first civilian version of the Humvee, the Hummer H1, in 1992. However, both Hummer and Humvee models were built separately and we often see consumers mistake the two vehicles for one since ex-military Humvees can be purchased by civilians as well. This example is reported to be an ex-military 2009 AM General Humvee that is currently located in California. It is great for rugged off-roading while hauling your everything and being one with your surroundings.
