Overview of 1988 Mercury Cougar Tiffany Coupe For Sale by Owner

If you were affluent in the Eighties and lived in Miami, you could reach out to the folks over at Classic Motor Carriages (CMC). What they did was take your Eighties car and turn it into a Thirties show car in terms of design, resulting in head-turners even in 2022! As well as dealing with cars from Porsche and Mercedes-Benz, CMC turned their attention to the brand-new Eighties Mercury Cougar, making it look nothing like it did when it rolled off the factory floors. Rumor has it that there were only 50 examples based on the 80s Mercury Cougar platform made. Here’s a 1988 Mercury Cougar Tiffany Coupe courtesy of CMC. Located in Texas this unusual machine has just 47,500 miles run since new according to its current owner.

Exterior and Interior

Whilst Mercury developed the sixth generation Cougar with computer-aided design, this 1988 Mercury Cougar Tiffany Coupe, sporting a modified body in white, and all its bells and whistles which include a twin fog lamps, stainless steel bumpers, running boards and even 4 trumpet horns, doesn't take away every single design feature as upon closer inspection it’s hard to not miss the notchback design of the sixth-generation Cougar. Wire wheels and white-wall tires complete the retro look. The body and exterior features may have been changed but the interior on this 1988 Mercury Cougar Tiffany Coupe is completely original. From the period steering wheel with Cougar insignia which overlooks an uber-cool digital dash to the tan interior and factory cloth seats with electrical adjustment, it’s all sixth generation Cougar. The seller notes that the windows work, and is reported to have fixed the AC as well. You get a Pyle Plus CD/cassette player installed, and the steering wheel sports cruise control buttons as well.

Engine

Driving feel was geared more towards a smooth ride in this 1988 Mercury Cougar Tiffany Coupe and the 5.0L V8 Windsor present under the hood does that job quite well. Power is sent to the rear wheels of the car through an automatic gearbox with the gears being chosen through a column styled gearbox. It’s also reported that a new fuel pump has been installed.

Mercury was first introduced as a subsidiary division of the Ford Motor Company that bridged the gap between the affordable Ford models and the luxury Lincoln lineup. When Mercury launched the Cougar model, it was supposed to provide a European-styled alternative to the Ford Mustang. It went on to become the only Mercury ever to win the “Motor Trend Car of the Year” title. The Cougar lineup saw eight generations, where the car transformed from a Pony car to a personal luxury coupe. This stunning example of the 1970 Mercury Cougar belongs to the final year of its first generation. It reportedly has 51322 miles on its clock and is currently located in Port Hueneme, California. If you are looking for a rare classic that will turn heads and spark conversation, this Cougar is for you.
