When speaking of tuned Mustangs, Shelby is usually the most common term that comes to mind. There were, however, a couple of notable alternatives such as Saleen. For the 4th generation Mustang, Saleen had the S281 range, which had several models including this supercharged version: the S281 SC. Saleen took the Mustang and gave it a long list of upgrades, including many visual changes, upgraded engine components and other drivetrain changes. While Saleen had previously been simply a modifier of existing Mustangs, with this range they developed a uniform set of models and established themselves as a major performance-enhancer in the Mustang world. This fine example has a mere 46,650 miles on it and is production #2 from 2003, as stated by its seller.

This vehicle is finished in a very becoming Torch Red with a black convertible top and a Dark Charcoal interior. It has the Saleen Speedster package and Saleen badging. While most of the upgrades took place under the hood, there were several visual changes made too. It has a unique front fascia with integrated driving lights and a unique rear bumper with “Saleen” lettering and central twin exhaust tips. Further, it has a Saleen rear spoiler, side skirts, rear valence and the Saleen championship wreath. Inside, there are Saleen performance driving pedals, white-faced Saleen gauges, a Saleen short-throw shifter with a leather shift knob, Saleen graphics and identification and floor mats with the Saleen logo. Additionally, this car has chrome alloy wheels with upgraded 18” tires, and the front bumper number, engine plaque, dash plaque, console plaque and key fobs are all serialized.

The S281SC retains the original 4.6-liter Mustang V8 engine (mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with a close ratio shifter), but it has several key upgrades done to it, and many of the other mechanical components like the brakes and suspension have been significantly upgraded as well. It has a Racecraft suspension system with high performance calibrated struts, shocks, swings and sway bars. The front suspension is a Macpherson strut set-up with N2 struts and coil springs, and a 1.38” front sway bar, pivot bushings and end links. The rear Quadra-Shock suspension has N2 shocks and coil springs, and a Panhard rod with pivot bushings. In terms of brakes, it has been given a Saleen 13” high performance braking system with slotted rotors. And finally, of course, the Mustang V8: it’s upgraded with a Saleen Series IV supercharger and intercooler, boosting the horsepower rating to 375HP.
