The Ford Mustang has been a household name for decades. When it was first launched in 1964, it became an instant hit, taking 22,000 orders on the first day and selling more than 1.2 million units over the next 2 years. The first-generation Mustang was sold till 1973 with various mechanical and cosmetic changes almost every year. The 1964-1966 cars were very similar and were available as a two-door hardtop, fastback and convertible with a choice of a 3 or 4 speed manual or a 3-speed automatic and several engine options. The 1965 model saw changes in both the straight 6 and the base V8, and the generator was replaced with an alternator.
Exterior and Interior
Convertible Mustangs are always a pleasing sight due to the ratio of coupes to convertibles that were sold. The early Mustangs looked elegant in all 3 body types (especially compared to their successors and competitors), and this is highlighted in the convertible. This one is burgundy with a black soft top. Even though it has been repainted, it still retains its original black interior. While it doesn’t seem to have a lot of extra options, the owner reports that everything on the car does work except for the holes in the soft top that appears to leak during rainy days. The seats and the upholstery seem to be in good condition, despite being nearly 60 years old (possibly attributed to the low mileage). Both the front and the rear seats have lap belts for safety. All the chrome and the paintwork look shiny with no major visible issues. Even the engine bay looks great and is less crowded thanks to the straight 6 engine.
Engine
6-cylinder Mustangs have never been particularly popular among enthusiasts, but in the Mustang I, this makes it a relatively uncommon spec. Especially as its also a convertible, and still has not only the original 200ci inline 6, but also the (original) automatic transmission. Many cars with this combination have been V8 swapped and/or given manual transmissions over the years, making this one quite attractive to an enthusiast/collector (especially as it reportedly has just 40,100 miles on it). The seller states that the servicing is up to date and the car comes with 2 keys.
