Overview of 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Roadster For Sale by Owner

The most iconic generation of Mercedes-Benz’ long-running SL model is arguably the third-generation R107. Produced for eighteen years between 1971 and 1989, the R107 was a staple in Seventies and Eighties movies, driven by well-heeled ladies and gents. These cars were a massive hit in Hollywood too, with many celebs at the time owning one. It’s no surprise then, that they still turn heads when cruising. Get in on that head-turning action by purchasing this 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Roadster. Coming from Missouri, it’s got 92,000 miles on the clock and runs beautifully, according to the seller. Three sets of keys and a car cover are included in the sale.

Exterior and Interior

The R107 sports a timeless design that doesn’t look dated, rather well-aged. It’s a hard act to pull off, but this 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Roadster does just that, wearing a prominent red paintwork which the seller is unsure of whether the car has been repainted. The beauty of these SLs is that you get a convertible top, which is black on this car, as well as the original, red-painted hard top which you can install when necessary. This solution grants you the best of both worlds – a soft-top convertible for sunny and windy days, and a proper hardtop roof for winter and wet weather driving. Storing the hardtop at your home is made easier by the inclusion of the original hardtop stand in the sale of this car. Two sets of wheels are also included in the sale, which are the honeycomb alloys as well as the steel wheels with hubcaps. The interior sports a black color theme and is strictly an affair for two. The seller reports that the radio is an aftermarket unit that may have been installed in the Eighties. You get a set of clear dials, a nice thin-rimmed four-spoke steering wheel and power windows as part of the conveniences.

Engine

This 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL sports a 4.5L V8 engine that’s equipped with Bosch fuel injection, helping it put out 190hp and 240lb-ft to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. This car has received a recent tune up, with the fuel system reportedly completely gone over with injection system checked as well. New coils, wires and plugs have been installed too.

Now here’s a classic car that’s perfectly representative of what the cream of the crop were driving around in the Seventies and Eighties. This 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SL is part of the R107 series of the popular SL-Class from Mercedes-Benz. Made between 1971 and 1989, the R107 became a firm favorite with those who could afford it and demanded signature Mercedes-Benz luxury in a two-door, grand-tourer body. It posed significant threats to models from established American luxury automakers as a result. Of the over 300,000 examples made, over two thirds came to North America! Yes, the R107 was immensely popular, which is why you should seriously check out this Jacksonville-based car. And if you need more convincing, it’s got a super low 28,507 miles on the clock!

In 1971, Mercedes-Benz revealed the R107 generation of their popular SL-Class luxury grand tourer. It took over from the W113 ‘Pagoda’ which defined Sixties Mercedes-Benz two-door cars in Europe and North America. The R107 brought new design, updated engineering, and a removable hardtop as key features. It would be made until 1989, with 300,175 units produced during this time. Interestingly, over 204,000 of those units came to the United States, representing a 68% share of total production! Now, you can still find many of these cars running happily, because they were built during a time when planned obsolescence wasn’t even conceived of. That’s why they are the perfect starter classic, even for a younger person. Today’s 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SL comes from Boulder and has a low 31,000 miles on the clock. With its 4.5-liter fuel-injected V8 and 3-speed automatic gearbox it’s already ticking the right boxes for a classic car. Add the Becker Mexico cassette stereo into the mix, and you’ve got a winner!
