Penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, the lines of this 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 Turbo are truly a sight to behold, in all their stainless steel glory, with the gullwing doors and staggered turbine wheels. This example underwent a comprehensive refurbishment by DeLorean Industries in 2020 and looks simply stunning. A new windshield, replaced chassis, refinished front and rear fascias, louvered rear window cover, front spoiler and DeLorean Industries Spec ‘Bullitt’ proof rock screen are some of the enhancements done during the refurbishment. Venture aboard into the black interior and relive your Marty McFly fantasies, albeit without the extra wiring, paraphernalia, and flux capacitor. The interior looks great, with clear gauges and the seven-position climate control including air conditioning all present and correct. A Momo steering wheel and aftermarket shift knob have been installed. The head unit has been upgraded to a Pioneer model with CD and USB input for your musical pleasure.
When new, the weak point of the DeLorean DMC-12 was its engine. To put it bluntly, the 2.85-litre single overhead cam fuel-injected Peugeot-Renault-Volvo (PRV) unit put out only 130hp and 153lb-ft which didn’t do justice to such a futuristic car, even less so when coupled to a three speed automatic transmission. However, this 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 covers that base, as it’s 2.85-litre PRV V6 was rebuilt by DeLorean industries and blessed with a turbo kit, as well as intercooler, EFI system, coolant overflow tank and custom exhaust. New brake lines and stainless steel suspension have been added too. Driving the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox, this turbocharged DeLorean finally has the power chops to match its looks!
