When a Mustang contains the word “Shelby” in its name, you know it’s going to be something special. This 2007 Mustang Shelby GT500 is no exception. In fact, being a convertible arguably makes this car even more interesting. The GT500 was available from 2007 to 2009 and had a lot in common with the lower spec cars (aside from the much-upgraded engine and gearbox). As such, like the other 5th generation Mustangs, the GT500 was very much an old school pony car. It has a classic design, has a loud and powerful V8 at the front and can spin its rear wheels well when asked to. It was never intended to handle like a GTR, but that’s not where its strength lies. Even so, some track tests have shown that it was able to set some very competitive lap times.
In terms of design, it carries a marked resemblance to its celebrated ancestors of the 60s, even down to the blue racing stripes on the white body. It has Cobra badges on the fenders with “GT500” written below, and also on the trunk lid along with a “SHELBY” badge to remind everyone that this is no ordinary Mustang. The black and silver, SVT branded, 5-spoke, 18” aluminum wheels stand out well against the light-colored body. The black convertible top matches the black interior. Inside, it has bucket seats and an aftermarket audio player (which doesn’t look out of place). The gear shift knob is white with blue stripes, much like the exterior of the car. The gauge cluster is also quite interesting, with 4 smaller gauges (fuel, boost, temperature and oil) located between the speedometer and the tachometer.
At the heart of the GT500 is a 5.4L supercharged V8 that drives the rear wheels via a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. It has an aftermarket dual exhaust system and K&M air filters. The suspension is SVT-tuned, consisting of a MacPherson strut suspension system at the front and a solid axle 3-link suspension at the rear. The braking system is very competent too; power 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with BREMBO brake calipers.
