Mercedes-Benz are known for an extensive line-up of passenger vehicles to suit almost any need. Between 1992 and 2014, they sold the CL Coupe as their flagship grand tourer, for the well-heeled who preferred driving to being chauffeured around, and wanted a two-door S-Class to roll around in. The CL-Class nameplate came to an end post-2014, but the model didn’t die. Instead, it was incorporated into the S-Class line-up, as the S-Class Coupe and Convertible. What we’ve got on sale here is a 2012 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG from the third generation with 47,000 miles on the clock.

One of the defining factors of the CL-Class is the lack of a visible B-pillar, giving the impression of an airy cabin and generous glasshouse area. This 2012 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG shows itself in a stylish black paintwork with AMG body styling and a set of silver multi-spoke alloys wearing low-profile rubber. It’s got cornering lamps as well, and at the rear, four silver exhaust tips proclaim its potency if the AMG badging isn’t hint enough. However, the place you want to be is on the inside, and that’s where this 2012 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG continues the black theme. Up to four occupants can be accommodated. The front seats are climatized, offering heating and ventilation in addition to the electric adjustment with memory function. You’ve also got an AMG performance steering wheel, rear view camera, sophisticated infotainment system that doesn’t feel like it’s from 2012, a sublime Harman/Kardon sound system, in-dash 6CD changer, dual-zone climate control, active multi-contour seat package, AMG floor mats, and Designo alcantara headliner. There’s also some carbon-fiber effect trim on the doors and center console.

This 2012 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG comes with a 5.5L Biturbo V8 that puts out 563hp and 664lb-ft thanks to the AMG Performance Package. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via an AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed automatic gearbox. Zero to sixty is dispatched in just 4.4 seconds, and the aforementioned AMG Performance Package also raises the speed limiter to 186mph. When it’s time to slow down, you can count on the ventilated disc brakes to do the job effectively.

Arguably the most popular Mercedes-Benz model in the United States during the Seventies and Eighties, The R107 era of their SL-Class grand tourer saw over 204,000 units find homes. This was during an 18-year production run that spanned 1971 to 1989. Impressive as the figure may be for a luxury car, it’s even more admirable when you consider that just over 300,000 were made in total! In fact, more R107 SLs found homes Stateside than they did in Germany or anywhere else in the world. Today, there’s no shortage of fine examples, thanks to the car’s superb Mercedes-Benz build quality. Hence, this Texas-based 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL is a rather sensible purchase to make, even if you have no idea about classic cars. With its 5.6-liter V8, 4-speed automatic gearbox and aftermarket Kenwood stereo unit, it’s a sound choice. Don’t worry about the 142,000 miles on the odometer, these cars are built to go the distance if maintained well.

In 1971, Mercedes-Benz revealed the R107 generation of their popular SL-Class luxury grand tourer. It took over from the W113 ‘Pagoda’ which defined Sixties Mercedes-Benz two-door cars in Europe and North America. The R107 brought new design, updated engineering, and a removable hardtop as key features. It would be made until 1989, with 300,175 units produced during this time. Interestingly, over 204,000 of those units came to the United States, representing a 68% share of total production! Now, you can still find many of these cars running happily, because they were built during a time when planned obsolescence wasn’t even conceived of. That’s why they are the perfect starter classic, even for a younger person. Today’s 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SL comes from Boulder and has a low 31,000 miles on the clock. With its 4.5-liter fuel-injected V8 and 3-speed automatic gearbox it’s already ticking the right boxes for a classic car. Add the Becker Mexico cassette stereo into the mix, and you’ve got a winner!
