The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has its roots back in 1979, when Daimler-Benz decided to create a rugged military off-roader which would be built by Magna Steyr in Austria. Soon enough, a civilian version hit the market and went through several iterations, and saw an extensive revamp in 1990, becoming the first generation, or W463. The W463 would run for 28 years before the W463A second-generation took over. What we’ve got here is a first-generation 2014 Mercedes-Benz G550 4MATIC for sale, with 132,000 miles under its belt.

A G-Class has an unmistakable silhouette and design characteristics that have somehow retained relevance well over four decades after it was first penned. The W463 marked the transition of the G-Class from spartan to luxury, and would see much updating along the way. This 2014 Mercedes-Benz G550 4MATIC wears a Polar White paintjob with contrasting black five-spoke Mercedes-Benz alloy rims. A black and chrome crash bar adorns the front, and if you look closely beneath the rear doors, you can see the downward-pointing exhaust outlets on either side. The rear is where the utilitarian look is most prominent, with a simple design, basic lighting clusters and spare wheel hung out. The interior is surprisingly luxurious, but this is Mercedes-Benz, and they no longer do spartan and utilitarian. Dressed in a Designo Auburn Brown theme with Designo Leather seats, and Designo Light Poplar wood trim, it’s got all the creature comforts you’d expect including climate control, electrically adjustable front seats that are heated and ventilated too, infotainment system, multifunction steering wheel, color multi information display in between the dials, leather-trimmed doors, Harman/Kardon sound system and the usual powered conveniences.

This 2014 Mercedes-Benz G550 4MATIC gets its power from a 5.5L M273 V8 that sends 382hp and 391lb-ft to all four wheels via a Mercedes-Benz 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. There are three prominent switches on the center console right in between the air vents that actuate the front, center, and rear differential locks. The zero to sixty sprint when new was rated at a whisker under six seconds, with top speed stated as a limited 130mph.

Little did Mercedes-Benz envision that their tough and capable G-Class would become one of their most luxurious vehicles as time passed by. When the automaker created the G-Class on a request made by the Shah of Iran in the late 1970s, it was envisioned as a military vehicle with a civilian variant available as well. As time passed by, the G-Class gained a formidable reputation for its off-road prowess, with many pro off-roaders swearing by it. However, by 1990, Mercedes-Benz saw a segment that would value a decent amount of off-road ability paired with ample luxury and comfort features.
