Now on the seventh generation, Mercedes-Benz’ S-Class is renowned for being the best full-size luxury sedan that the German automaker produces, and one of the best in the world. It’s a status symbol and statement of excellence. Did you know, though, that for those who like to drive rather than be driven, Mercedes-Benz also make the S-Class Coupe and Convertible? Formerly known as the CL-Class, these two-door Grand Tourers returned to S-Class badging from 2014 onwards. Here’s one such car, a 2017 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, with just 20,500 miles on the clock, and being an AMG variant, you can be sure that it packs a punch.

Draped in a very understated shade of dark green, this 2017 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG exudes class with the little details, that include Swarovski crystal headlamp accents, 20-inch 5-spoke AMG wheels and a very smooth silhouette, courtesy of the blacked-out B-pillars that give it an almost pillarless coupe appearance. AMG and V8 Bi-Turbo badging discretely highlight its potency on the road, as does the S63 badge on the rear. The Night View Assist Plus Package ensures enhanced visibility under dark and stormy conditions, allowing you to drive along with confidence no matter the road. The interior is where things really get interesting, as you’ve got a primarily white color theme with exclusive upholstery, Porcelain Dynamica headliner, illuminated door sills, keyless entry and the mbrace system that allows easy remote access to this car via your smartphone. Once you’re inside, you can enjoy a host of tech toys, including heated steering wheel, front and center arm rests, front and rear seats and the Warmth & Comfort package, as well as dual-zone climate control. Your music will sound great through the Burmester surround sound system, and the high-tech dual-screen set-up for the instrument cluster and infotainment system will be a talking point for everyone who travels in the car. Moving on to safety, we’ve got a lot here as well, including Driver Assistance Package, Active Blind Spot Assistance, Pre-Safe with pedestrian recognition, Cross-Traffic Assistance and Rear-End Collision Detection, apart from the usual cruise control, speed limiter and suite of airbags. This is an S-Class after all, and it’s got to pack the very latest from Mercedes-Benz’ tech toybox at the time it was built.

You’re going to want all that tech, as under the hood of this 2017 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG lies a potent 5.5L twin turbocharged V8 engine that spits out 536hp and 590lb-ft, granting zero to sixty sprints in the mid four second range, and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Drive is sent to all four wheels via an AMG Speedshift 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.

The S-Class nameplate is one with a long history of producing technologically advanced, full-size luxury sedans. However, for a few years between 2015 and 2021 it also came in the form of a coupe (named the C217 generation). It filled the role left empty by the retirement of the CL-Class and followed the same concept: pillarless luxury grand tourer. The S63 AMG version added the word ‘high performance’ to that description and shares the same drivetrain as its sedan counterpart. Mercedes packed the S coupe with the same industry-leading technology that the sedan got, but the market for a car of this caliber was quite niche, leading to its discontinuation after 2021 as it didn’t meet the production numbers that Mercedes wanted (leaving buyers with the option of getting an E-Class coupe or an SL now). While the relatively low sales were bad news for Mercedes, it means that current and future S-Class Coupe owners have a rarer car on their hands, potentially making it a sought-after future classic one day (especially the more desirable models like the S 63 AMG).

The most popular mainstream luxury car in the world, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class represents an aspirational point and a life goal for many. It’s a full-size luxury car that you treat yourself to, when you can afford one and have made it in life. The S-Class name came in 1972, but the model itself has parentage dating back to 1954. Of course, you’ll also find performance-oriented examples fettled by none other than AMG, those famous Mercedes-Benz tuners who are now a part of the parent company – in fact, they’ve got a line-up of Mercedes-AMG models available. Today, we’ve got a potent 2008 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG from W221 era or fifth generation of S-Class. This car comes from Bonita Springs, Florida and has amassed around 110,000 miles, ready for action.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the pinnacle full-size offering by Mercedes-Benz. Widely recognized as the finest mainstream luxury car in the world, ownership of an S-Class is a bucket list item for many people to aspire towards. The S-Class continues to represent the benchmark in luxury that many automakers strive to compare themselves to and has been a technological tour de force throughout the years as well. Many innovations that we take for granted today, even in basic econoboxes, likely debuted on an S-Class a few decades back. Oh, and if you’re a performance fan, there are AMG variants to enjoy. Take this 2017 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG as a perfect example. This 90,000-mile car is waiting for a new owner to thrill, with its Stage 2 tune making it even more potent than when it left AMG’s stables. The car comes to you with all maintenance up to date, so you can enjoy it sans worries.

Arguably the most popular Mercedes-Benz model in the United States during the Seventies and Eighties, The R107 era of their SL-Class grand tourer saw over 204,000 units find homes. This was during an 18-year production run that spanned 1971 to 1989. Impressive as the figure may be for a luxury car, it’s even more admirable when you consider that just over 300,000 were made in total! In fact, more R107 SLs found homes Stateside than they did in Germany or anywhere else in the world. Today, there’s no shortage of fine examples, thanks to the car’s superb Mercedes-Benz build quality. Hence, this Texas-based 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL is a rather sensible purchase to make, even if you have no idea about classic cars. With its 5.6-liter V8, 4-speed automatic gearbox and aftermarket Kenwood stereo unit, it’s a sound choice. Don’t worry about the 142,000 miles on the odometer, these cars are built to go the distance if maintained well.

In 1971, Mercedes-Benz revealed the R107 generation of their popular SL-Class luxury grand tourer. It took over from the W113 ‘Pagoda’ which defined Sixties Mercedes-Benz two-door cars in Europe and North America. The R107 brought new design, updated engineering, and a removable hardtop as key features. It would be made until 1989, with 300,175 units produced during this time. Interestingly, over 204,000 of those units came to the United States, representing a 68% share of total production! Now, you can still find many of these cars running happily, because they were built during a time when planned obsolescence wasn’t even conceived of. That’s why they are the perfect starter classic, even for a younger person. Today’s 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SL comes from Boulder and has a low 31,000 miles on the clock. With its 4.5-liter fuel-injected V8 and 3-speed automatic gearbox it’s already ticking the right boxes for a classic car. Add the Becker Mexico cassette stereo into the mix, and you’ve got a winner!

Do you want a mid-2000s German grand tourer with a stonking V12 under the hood, all the best creature comforts and luxury features of the time, and most importantly, a Star badge on the hood? If so, this 2008 Mercedes-Benz SL600 RENNtech just might be your ticket to ride. It’s from the R230 era of Mercedes-Benz’s popular SL-Class line-up, and comes with twelve cylinders of German horsepower at your disposal. Plus, this rear-wheel drive machine features some enhancements by renowned tuning firm Renntech. It’s done just 20,000 miles to date and is up for grabs in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
