Despite its luxurious appeal, the BMW 8 Series has historically struggled to gain traction within BMW's lineup, with sales lagging behind more popular models like the 2 Series. Occupying the same market segment as the discontinued 6 Series, the 8 Series faces a challenging landscape due to ineffective marketing, intense competition, less-than-competitive pricing, and a lack of consumer appeal. However, none of that means that the 8 Series is a bad car. The range-topping M8 Coupe and Gran Coupe are among the best grand tourers, but their unpopularity stems from factors like intense competition. The 2022 BMW 840i is also a grand tourer, though not on the same level as the M8. Still, it offers excellent value, especially considering its price in today's market. But before diving into that, let's look at its performance numbers.
The 840i has always been the entry-level trim for the 8 Series, and like previous model years, the 2022 BMW 840i has a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, making 335 horsepower and 369 lb.ft. That might not sound like much, but the car is lightweight for its size, weighing in at around 4,100 pounds. This allows for a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The M Driver's package was limited to the M850i and M8 models, so you can't get a 2022 840i with a top speed higher than that. Nonetheless, it's not the top speed that determines the driving experience. Choosing the rear-wheel drive version is like driving a larger BMW M440i. Additionally, the quick-shifting 8-speed DCT amplifies the sense of power, giving the car a stronger performance feel than expected.
It may be a base model, but the 2022 BMW 840i's cabin is anything but basic. It blends style and functionality with heated, electronically adjustable leather seats up front and a decently spacious second row that only accommodates two due to the coupe body style. If passenger room is a deal breaker, the 840i Gran Coupe might be the better choice. The 2022 840i's cabin materials are top-notch, leaving little to criticize. As for practicality, the trunk is large for a coupe, and the passenger area offers ample storage with well-sized pockets, bins, and cupholders. The 840i's size helps lower its center of gravity, minimizing body roll and enhancing the overall driving and in-cabin experience. The suspension further improves ride comfort, featuring gas-pressurized shock absorbers that smooth out road imperfections and manage rapid body movements during spirited driving.
For 2022, BMW made the M Sport package standard on the 840i, adding M 19-inch wheels, an aero body kit, and blacked-out trims that replace the chrome accents on the grille and window surrounds. These updates give the car a resemblance to the M8 Coupe, though the 840i is noticeably less aggressive, particularly at the front. Its overall design is smoother than the M8, which features sharper lines. However, this isn't a drawback; the car looks great from every angle, especially from the rear and side profile. If you prefer a more aggressive look, we recommend getting a 2022 840i in Carbon Black Metallic or Black Sapphire metallic, as these colors match the gloss black elements better.
Inside the 2022 BMW 840i's cabin, you get a 10.3-inch infotainment display complemented by a 12.0-inch digital infotainment cluster. Additionally BMW was generous enough to make a heads-up display projected onto the windshield as standard. The displays run on BMW's iDrive, which includes Apple CarPlay, navigation, traffic information display, and Wi-Fi hotspot but no Android Auto. The driver assists and safety features suite has all the bells and whistles, including forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, dual-stage driver and passenger front airbags, tire-specific low tire pressure warning, and more. We've only touched on the basics, but there's much more that we can't fully list here.
A 2022 BMW 840i will set you back around $50,000, which is why we said earlier that it offers excellent value. One thing we know, however, is that it's worth spending a little bit more, around $10,000, for an M850i, especially if you want more on the performance side, considering it has a V8. The 2022 BMW 840i is an impossibly stylish BMW with its stellar proportions and fast-sitting-still form; hence, it carries the prestige of the BMW badge. Sure, it's not as fast as its M siblings, but it's exciting enough for a car of its stature and overly luxurious for what you spend buying it.
