When BMW put almost a $70,000 price tag on a brand new M4 in 2019, many people thought that was not a good move. However, in the last few years, the car has "somewhat" retained its value and attracted many followers into BMW's fold. Given its M pedigree, its performance capabilities, powerful engine, and comfort aren't in doubt. But with all these at your beck and call in the M4, is it the right luxury car for you? We shared our thoughts about the 2019 BMW M4 in this review.
There's no doubt that BMW poured its experience into making the M4 for the 2019 model (its second generation). It didn't deviate much design-wise and feature-wise from the first M4s made in 2015. As many will put it, the M4 is a "high-performance" version of the standard 4 Series and caters to the people who want more performance from their 4 Series. This is evident in its upgraded engine, suspension, exhaust systems, brakes, M-badging, etc. For the 2019 model year, BMW offered the M4 in coupe and convertible body styles, so you can choose what works for you. They also went the extra mile to make the BMW M4 Edition M Heritage - such a mouthful. This M4 M Heritage version is a limited edition of which BMW made only about 750 units. Of those 750 units, about 10% of them found their way to the UK, while the rest were shipped to other countries. It's based on the M4 Coupe and is distinguished by the "M4 Heritage" badging embossed on the seats, door sills, and carbon trims.
Nestled under the M4's muscular hood is the turbocharged 3.0L inline-six engine. It produces 425hp and 406lb-ft of torque and moves from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds. That's a decently fast time but slightly less than what you'd get in the M4 Competition (its bigger sibling that produces 444 hp). You can get the M4 with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Both shift smoothly, but if you want a more connected driving experience, you should opt for the manual tranny. The M4 has to compete with the Mercedes-AMG C63, Audi RS5, and Porsche 911 Carrera S. Each offers something similar to the M4. The Mercedes-AMG C63 makes 469hp and 479lb-ft of torque. This power pushes it from 0 to 60mph in 3.7 seconds (one second faster than the M4). The Porsche 911 Carrera S makes a slightly lower figure of 443hp and 390lb-ft of torque and hits 60mph in 3.6 seconds. The Audi RS5 hits 60mph in 3.9 seconds, although it makes more horsepower than the M4. Not minding the stiff competition, we can boldly say that the M4 is fast, agile, and powerful enough to take you to your destination. The M4's braking ability is equally up to the task, thanks to the carbon-ceramic brakes installed. The steering wheel and brake pedal feedback are top-notch, and the M4's stopping power is impressive. It takes the vehicle about 109ft to stop from 60mph. Regarding steering, you can choose from three modes, the best of which is the Comfort mode.
The comfort level in the 2019 M4 is similar to what the newer models offer. The cabin is spacious for a coupe, although passengers in the rear seats won't be comfortable enough. As expected, the materials used are of high quality. When you get into the car and sit in the seats, one of the things that you'll notice is that it's thick and bolstered. The seats are from the Competition lineup and are decently snug. With the doors and windows closed, the road noise is minimized. However, you'll have to contend with the sound from the exhaust system. It's pretty loud and can piss off some of your neighbors if you rev it high. The ride comfort is excellent, although the suspension is stiff - a quirk of getting a sports car. However, you have damper comfort settings to thank as they take away some of the bumps on the road. The M4's interior also features a variety of amenities, including a large infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a premium sound system, and a head-up display. Storage is improved in the 2019 M4 as it offers more space than many two-door coupes. The rear seats are usable, although tall passengers will not find them to be the most comfortable. The visibility and driving positions are excellent. You can easily select any driving mode for more comfort. There are various modes for the steering, suspension, stability control, and even throttle sensitivity.
The 2019 M4 looks fantastic, and the exterior is sporty. The doors seem large, and if you're in a tight parking lot, they will likely hit the cars beside them. As you stand facing the car's front, you can't help but notice that it slightly differs from the standard 4 Series of the same year. The front has the trademark BMW kidney grille, home to the M badge (which helps differentiate this as an M series). The headlights look crisp and clear and are angular. They sit princely atop the lower bumper, which houses the air intakes and front splitter. Moving over to the car's sides, you'll appreciate the sloping roofline and side skirts that give the M4 a sporty look. BMW also placed the M badges on the side fenders, which blended in with the car's overall looks from the sides. For 2019, the M4 had sporty-looking 19-inch wheels, gripping the road firmly and giving the vehicle the necessary balance. On the rear, you'll find the M4's modern slim taillights. They're LEDs and nicely light up the rear end of the car. A rear spoiler completes the sporty look. The trunk space is decent, and you can easily fold the rear seats in a 60-40 manner to improve the space.
The 2019 BMW M4 has many innovative features that ensure you'll drive in comfort. One of the most notable features is the M Dynamic Mode. This mode allows drivers to adjust the car's suspension, steering, and throttle response to their preferences. The M4 also offers a variety of driver assistance features that were available for the 2019 model year and have been improved in the newer M4s. In addition to its performance-focused features, the M4 offers a range of luxury features like climate control, an easy-to-use infotainment system, excellent smartphone integration, a heads-up display, etc.
Prices for used M4s typically range from $40,000 to $60,000 or more. The prices will vary depending on mileage, condition, and specific features.
