Few car manufacturers have made cars exclusively as convertibles without offering other body styles. When they do, the cars are often one-offs, limited production models, or special production units made to commemorate something, for example, another car. For BMW, however, the BMW Z4 has always been made as a roadster, and before it, there were other Z generations behind it, each produced in a similar body configuration. There have been coupes in some generations, but they were made in minimal production numbers. Is driving a roadster with the top down fun? Absolutely. But sometimes, you want to hear a healthy exhaust sound behind you that complements the thrill of open-air driving. It's for that reason and for that reason only that you buy a Z4 M40i, in this case the 2022 BMW Z4 M40i, over the base Z4 30i. Let's take a look at what makes it tinker.
If you know what's under the 2022 BMW M240i's or M340i's hood, you probably know what you get underneath the 2022 BMW Z4 M40i's hood. It's the same turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, which, if healthy, should produce 382 horsepower and 369 lb.ft, which is a decent amount of power for an approximately 3,600-pound roadster. 0-60, as estimated by Car and Driver, takes 3.8 seconds, and top speed mazes out at 165 mph which is commendable considering that BMW usually limits the top speed in most of their cars to 155 mph. Something we're not thrilled about with the 2022 Z4 M40i is that it was never offered with a manual transmission, unlike previous model years, as BMW chose to use the 8-speed automatic as the only transmission in both Z4 models. It's snappy as you would expect, but there's something about banging gears with the roof down.
Even with a blindfold on, you'd recognize the 2022 BMW Z4 M40i as a BMW by touch alone if you're familiar with BMWs. Everything is almost identical, say, to a 2022 M240i, from the center console elements arrangement to the dashboard layout that's slightly angled towards the driver at the center. What's immediately apparent, even to those overly unfamiliar with BMWs, is that there are no rear seats, a design choice that enhances its sporty character. Behind the seats, there are twin buttresses designed to protect occupants in the event of a rollover. In addition to that, they also enhance the car's roadster body style with the roof down. Between these buttresses is a wind deflector that reduces wind noise inside the cabin. But what's the use of lowering the roof if you don't want to deal with wind noise, especially on a sunny, breezy day?
The 2022 BMW Z4 M40i's exterior, like the exterior, is very much similar to other BMWs. But there's something distinct about it that makes it unique. For example, it's among the models that BMW didn't alter the old grille style but refreshed it, making it sharper and more contemporary. The headlights are unique too, and they combine with the grille and vents to give the front fascia a unique look that seems aggressive and, at the same time, sleek. The side profile adopts a similar aesthetic with sharper body lines running from the front to the rear fender, cutting through the doors beautifully. Still on the side profile, you can't miss the fender vents that enhance the car's appeal. In addition, they improve aerodynamics by reducing the air pressure in the wheel arches and drawing hot air away from the brakes. The rear end is not as exciting as the front, but it's pleasing to look at.
Being an M model, the 2022 BMW Z4 M40i benefits from several enhancements from BMW's M Division. It features an Adaptive M suspension with variable shock absorber settings that allow you to switch between comfort and sportier ride modes. Upgraded brakes come standard, and if you're considering a low-mileage example, it likely still has the original factory pads and rotors. Moving inside, the cabin has a 10.3-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and more, though it does not include Android Auto. The Z4 M40i also comes with a comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance features, though we won't list them all here, rest assured, it includes everything you need and then some more.
The 2022 BMW Z4 M40i is sure to impress, and we completely understand if you're eager to buy one immediately. How much are you looking at spending? Most examples average $50,000, but it's common to see some units sell for slightly more or less depending on mileage, factory extras, history, and seller location, among other factors.
