Between 1936 and 1940, BMW made their first convertible, which they sold as the BMW 328. But like most of their cars today, it wasn't just a convertible. It set a standard for sports cars during its era, dominating races as it was expected to do, having been unveiled at the Nürburgring. To commemorate the 328, BMW unveiled the Z4 M40i First edition in 2018 based on the Z4 M40i, which, as we said earlier, is the spec to go for since it adds a bit of play to the thrill of open-air driving. However, the Z4 M40i wasn't just an addition to the lineup. It was unveiled as a limited production model and hence is more exclusive. If that's not enough reason for you to buy a 2020 BMW Z4 M40i First Edition, some of the upgrades it has over the standard Z4 M40i include a Frozen Orange Metallic paint job, unique leather interior, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Those are just a few; as we go further, we'll list more. Let's start with what's under the hood.
The 2020 BMW Z4 M40i First Edition is based on the Z4 M40i, meaning it comes with the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 382 horsepower and 369 lb.ft. That's plenty of excitement for a rear-wheel-drive 3,400-pound roadster. The best part is that the car has a 50/50 weight distribution, which makes it a blast to drive, especially around corners. Power is sent to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic, but it would have been better if BMW hadn't discontinued the 6-speed manual. Thanks to the combination of the transmission, engine, and lightweight chassis, the Z4 M40i can do 0-60 mph in about 4.5 seconds, but the top speed is capped at 155 mph, as with most mid-tier BMWs. The power figures might not be as high as expected, but you'll quickly forget that once you lower the roof and feel the wind in your hair. Plus, the exhaust note with the top down is something to savor.
Being a special production model, the 2020 BMW Z4 M40i First Edition's interior is specially refined. The seats are lined with Vernasca black leather, the cabin's main attraction since you won't find it in other models. In every other way, the offerings are similar to the Z4 M40i, comprising heated, electronically adjustable, and memory seats. New buyers could add ambient lighting and other options, such as a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system, enhancing the cabin's elegance. The dashboard, designed with the driver in mind, as with most BMWs, features an infotainment display and a digital instrument cluster that can sometimes be a bit complex. Fortunately, the infotainment system can be managed in multiple ways, using the rotary controller, voice, buttons, or touch.
BMW unveiled the Z4 M40i First edition with a Frozen Orange Metallic paint job that would become the standard color for the car throughout its production, which ended in 2022. It's disappointing that you can't get one in any other color, but when you get used to it, you'll notice that the color matches the car perfectly, especially with High Gloss Shadow Line exterior accents, for example, on the mirror caps, fender vents, diffuser, and front vents. Also, part of the special treatment for the exterior was multi-double-spoke 19-inch alloys, which were also finished in black, creating a sense of uniformity throughout the exterior.
2018 saw BMW refresh the Z4 lineup, so like in previous model years, the 2020 BMW Z4 M40i First Edition came with new adaptive LED headlights with a matrix function. That's not all. Underneath, the car is essentially an M240i as it has a bunch of M Division goodies such as M Sport Brakes, an adaptive sport suspension, an M Sport differential, and variable sport steering. Driver assists, and safety features are well catered for, comprising lane departure warning, distance information, cross traffic alert, parking assistant, and pedestrian warning, to mention a few. The infotainment display we mentioned earlier incorporates Apple CarPlay, navigation, audio input, radio, and other essential features plus more. How much will a 2020 BMW Z4 M40i First Edition set you back?
BMW reportedly produced only 444 units of the Z4 M40i First Edition, making it quite rare to find one for sale. However, based on a few listings we've seen, prices typically match that of the standard Z4 M40i models, ranging between $45,000 and $60,000. If we don't have one in our BMW Z4 listings, get in touch with us, and we'll work something out. In the meantime, explore our BMW listings for other options that might interest you.
The 2020 BMW Z4 M40i First Edition is a cut above the standard Z4 M40i, and while there's not much that says it, it's a car worth owning.
