Background Story of this 1953 Mercury Monterey

Overview of 1953 Mercury Monterey For Sale by Owner

With its name derived from Monterey Bay, the same inspiration for the famous Monterey Jack cheese, the Mercury Monterey was a full-size automobile by Mercury that was available between 1952 and 1974. Mercury itself, the mid-tier luxury division of Ford sat between Ford and Lincoln, and, sadly, was retired in 2011. So, this is one of those classic American names from a defunct manufacturer. That only adds to the cachet of this 1953 Mercury Monterey. The fact that its maker is no more only adds more to the car’s value, as does its Flathead V8, auto gearbox and mere 1,700 miles. A discerning collector will have no hesitation in snapping up this car, while a budding collector should seriously consider acquiring it sans delay.

Exterior and Interior

This 1953 Mercury Monterey comes in a nice red suit and complements it with a clean black convertible top. The top, in fact, looks brand-new, as does the superbly clear rear window which is a rarity with old-timey Fifties convertibles these days. Ditto the car’s chrome bumpers, red wheels, chrome hubcaps and whitewall tires. All these elements speak of a restoration that was done with no expense or attention to detail spared. All this helps bring out those exquisite details such as the boat-like rear styling, the bumper-mounted foglamps and the slightly wrap-around windshield. The red and black interior of this 1953 Mercury Monterey is equally pristine. It’s endowed with seating for four adults, a push-button radio in the body-colored dashboard, and some interesting sliders for the car’s heating and ventilation system. The car also comes with four power windows which is quite nice for the Fifties, but remember, Mercury was a cut above Ford in terms of hierarchy, and of course, price. Pop the trunk and the same meticulous attention to detail has been applied here as well; even the spare wheel and tire is in great shape.

Engine

Power comes from a 292ci flathead V8, naturally aspirated and equipped with a single 2-barrel carburetor under a factory-style oil-bath air cleaner, maintaining an authentic period-correct appearance. While the displacement cannot be visually verified, the overall engine bay presentation is consistent with a traditional flathead setup rather than a high-performance or multi-carb build. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a period-correct Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission, making this Monterey well-suited for smooth, relaxed cruising. The chassis retains its original suspension architecture and drum brakes, aligning with the car’s intended role as a comfortable boulevard cruiser rather than a performance-focused build.

Mercury was one of those brands under the Ford umbrella in the United States. Positioned in the mid-range segment, the brand bid adieu to the world in 2011. Over their 85-year existence, Mercury has made some lovely classic cars that are highly desirable today. This 1950 Mercury Coupe is one such example. It reportedly underwent a restoration in 2011 and has 50,000 miles to its name. It's also a restomod of sorts, as it's got a newer engine and some creature comforts.

When discussing the classic car segment, one brand is often overlooked. The Mercury brand was designed by Ford to offer premium solutions that bridge the gap between Ford and Lincoln. 1970 Mercury Cougar

VERIFIED SELLER
PENDING SALE
$29,999

Mercury was first introduced as a subsidiary division of the Ford Motor Company that bridged the gap between the affordable Ford models and the luxury Lincoln lineup. When Mercury launched the Cougar model, it was supposed to provide a European-styled alternative to the Ford Mustang. It went on to become the only Mercury ever to win the “Motor Trend Car of the Year” title. The Cougar lineup saw eight generations, where the car transformed from a Pony car to a personal luxury coupe. This stunning example of the 1970 Mercury Cougar belongs to the final year of its first generation. It reportedly has 51322 miles on its clock and is currently located in Port Hueneme, California. If you are looking for a rare classic that will turn heads and spark conversation, this Cougar is for you.

1949 Packard Eight Series Touring Sedan

VERIFIED SELLER
PENDING SALE
$21,999

The Packard Motor Company is one of those great American auto names that you’ve likely never heard of. That’s because they came to be in 1899, but went out in 1956, when they merged with Studebaker. It’s likely your parents themselves may not have heard of the brand either, but your grandparents likely will. They will reminisce about how Packards were luxury cars at the time, owned and driven by the wealthy, and always statement-makers whenever they were seen driving along, or parked in the foyers of swish hotels. Today, you can find out how it feels to have a Packard by acquiring this Stanton-based 1949 Packard 8 Restomod. The car comes with a newer V8 under the hood and has gained an automatic transmission too. This makes it ideal for the generation who never learned to drive stick. We’re told that the frame is from a Cadillac de Ville, and that documentation is included with the sale of the car. One key is also provided.

1956 Jaguar XK 140

VERIFIED SELLER
PENDING SALE
$41,999

Jaguar Cars of Britain is well known for making some fine sporting machines during its long history. Before we had examples such as the breathtaking E-Type, or XK-E in North America, machines like the XK120, XK140 and XK150 ruled the roost. These were fine sports cars meant to embody the spirit of driving, and targeted at those who desired the best blend of luxury and driving pleasure. Between 1954 and 1957, it was the turn of the XK140 which brought more interior space as well as upgraded mechanicals over the XK120 which it replaced. A total of 8,937 cars was made during this time, with just 1,959 fixed-head coupes produced in left-hand drive. That makes this 1956 Jaguar XK140 one of 1,959 units, a statistic that places it in greater rarity than some supercars! If you’d like to be its next custodian, this 3.4-liter machine awaits your kind consideration in New Albany, Ohio.

1951 Packard 200

VERIFIED SELLER
PENDING SALE
$20,000

Packard is an American auto brand that you’ve likely never heard of, or if so, in passing. Your parents might know if it though, your grandparents definitely will. That’s because the Packard Motor Company of Detroit, Michigan made cars between 1899 and 1956. They are widely known as the purveyors of the modern steering wheel, air conditioning in cars, and one of the first production 12-cylinder engines! Sad, then, that such an iconic brand died a quiet death in the Fifties, merging with Studebaker by 1953 and quietly disappearing thereafter. One of their last models was the 200, and we have an example for sale today. This 1951 Packard 200 comes from Marietta, Georgia, and has done just 19,000 miles as per what we’ve been told. It’s a fine classic car for those who seek an unusual choice rather than going with the usual suspects from the major brands.
