Overview of 1970 Mercury Cougar For Sale by Owner

Mercury was first introduced as a subsidiary division of the Ford Motor Company that bridged the gap between the affordable Ford models and the luxury Lincoln lineup. When Mercury launched the Cougar model, it was supposed to provide a European-styled alternative to the Ford Mustang. It went on to become the only Mercury ever to win the “Motor Trend Car of the Year” title. The Cougar lineup saw eight generations, where the car transformed from a Pony car to a personal luxury coupe. This stunning example of the 1970 Mercury Cougar belongs to the final year of its first generation. It reportedly has 51322 miles on its clock and is currently located in Port Hueneme, California. If you are looking for a rare classic that will turn heads and spark conversation, this Cougar is for you.

Exterior and Interior

One of the most notable features that set the 1970 Mercury Cougar apart from the rest is the split-grille design, dubbed the "electric shaver," and the hidden headlights. The Gunmetal Gray exterior of our subject car is adorned with blacked-out body trim, including the front & rear bumpers. Cougar emblems are displayed on the rear fenders, rear end, and on the nose of the car. It beautifully sits on 17’ aftermarket American Racing wheels, which are also in gunmetal gray to match the body paint. This 1970 Mercury Cougar enjoys a reupholstered red interior, which flaunts Rosewood appliqué throughout the cabin. The high-backed bucket seats provide extra comfort and support as you savor your long Sunday drives. If you are into classic features, you might notice that the steering wheel is a "rim-blow" steering wheel, which has its horn placed on the steering wheel rim.

Engine

At the heart of the 1970 Mercury Cougar is a 351ci Cleveland V8 engine that is equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor. Married to a 3-speed automatic transmission, this engine sends 300 horsepower at 5400 rpm to the rear wheels. It makes use of the durable Ford 9-inch rear end, which is standard in all first-gen Cougars. When new, these cars are capable of doing 0-60 mph in less than 7 seconds.
