Background Story of this 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL

Overview of 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL For Sale by Owner

If you want a classic car that’s timeless, elegant and Germanic, an R107 era Mercedes-Benz SL-Class example is the way to go. Made between 1971 and 1989, this is still considered the golden era of Mercedes-Benz’s pinnacle luxury grand tourer, the SL. Over 300,000 were made, of which two thirds ended up in the United States. So, finding one isn’t that hard, as evidenced by this 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL from New York. The car’s got over 167,000 miles on it, but that’s just proof of how wonderful it is to own and drive. Plus, these cars can really keep on running if given the right maintenance. With its torquey 5.6-liter V8 and both tops (yes, both) included in the sale, this is a classic that you can’t afford to let slip by. Call or DM us right now!

Exterior and Interior

This Dark Green Metallic 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL certainly looks regal, rolling on its period-correct 15-inch Gullideckel wheels and coming with both tops. Yes, R107 owners got a removable body-colored hard top, as well as a soft top, making this, in effect, two cars in one stylish package. Winter coming up? Just install the removable hard top and you’ve got a proper coupe to drive around in. Then, when Summer shows its lovely face, keep the hard top at home and use the tan-colored soft top when needed. The top has reportedly been replaced, ensuring that it’s in great condition and offers the best protection when deployed. The beige interior of this 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL offers two seats and a padded luggage area directly behind, augmenting the car’s trunk which gives up some space to store the soft top. This is more preferable to European-market cars which squeezed in a set of rear seats that were only suitable for very small children. Automatic climate control, power windows and power mirrors are standard, as is cruise control. Meanwhile, a Clarion radio has been installed as an upgrade in the music department. We’re told that the interior has been reupholstered as well, ensuring that it remains as comfortable as befits a car of this ilk.

Engine

This 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SL uses a 5.6-liter V8 with Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection. The engine was rated for 227hp and 287lb-ft when new. It’s paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and drives the rear wheels.

Arguably the most popular Mercedes-Benz model in the United States during the Seventies and Eighties, The R107 era of their SL-Class grand tourer saw over 204,000 units find homes. This was during an 18-year production run that spanned 1971 to 1989. Impressive as the figure may be for a luxury car, it’s even more admirable when you consider that just over 300,000 were made in total! In fact, more R107 SLs found homes Stateside than they did in Germany or anywhere else in the world. Today, there’s no shortage of fine examples, thanks to the car’s superb Mercedes-Benz build quality. Hence, this Texas-based 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL is a rather sensible purchase to make, even if you have no idea about classic cars. With its 5.6-liter V8, 4-speed automatic gearbox and aftermarket Kenwood stereo unit, it’s a sound choice. Don’t worry about the 142,000 miles on the odometer, these cars are built to go the distance if maintained well.

Never has a Continental car had more impact in North America than the R107 era of the Mercedes-Benz SL. Of the 300,000 plus examples made between 1971 and 1989, over two thirds came across to our continent! That’s amazing, but what’s even more amazing is that the car continues to captivate hearts across the States. It’s not unheard of for someone to pick an R107 SL as their first classic car – and some of these people weren’t even born when the R107 ended production. Heck, many of them were born after the turn of the Millenium! So, whether you’re a Boomer, Gen X, Gen Y or Millenial, you might like to take custody of this 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL from Sacramento. This Cali-based car has driven over 148,000 miles so far and comes with Giovanni wheels, an Alpine head unit, and of course, a 5.6-liter V8 under the hood.

In the Netflix film Glass Onion: Wake Up Dead Man from 2025, Daniel Craig’s character Benoit Blanc drives a classic Mercedes-Benz 560SL that appears to be a 1986 or 1987 model based on fan analysis. That alone should be enough to tell you why the R107 generation of SL-Class is still revered in 2025 and beyond. Produced between 1971 and 1989, over 300,000 were made and two thirds of that found their way to the United States. The car was a Hollywood favorite in its heyday, starring in countless films and TV series – one example is Knight Rider, where Devon Miles’s personal car is shown multiple times to be an R107-generation SL! Today, we have a 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL for sale from Bunnell with just 92,710 miles on the clock and you need not look far to discover why it’s a highly-demanded car. With its 5.6-liter naturally aspirated V8, it makes for a fine long-distance cruiser too. This particular car comes with the removable hardtop included in the sale, the original owner’s manual, and even a car cover!

1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SL

In 1971, Mercedes-Benz revealed the R107 generation of their popular SL-Class luxury grand tourer. It took over from the W113 ‘Pagoda’ which defined Sixties Mercedes-Benz two-door cars in Europe and North America. The R107 brought new design, updated engineering, and a removable hardtop as key features. It would be made until 1989, with 300,175 units produced during this time. Interestingly, over 204,000 of those units came to the United States, representing a 68% share of total production! Now, you can still find many of these cars running happily, because they were built during a time when planned obsolescence wasn’t even conceived of. That’s why they are the perfect starter classic, even for a younger person. Today’s 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SL comes from Boulder and has a low 31,000 miles on the clock. With its 4.5-liter fuel-injected V8 and 3-speed automatic gearbox it’s already ticking the right boxes for a classic car. Add the Becker Mexico cassette stereo into the mix, and you’ve got a winner!

1961 Chevrolet Impala Restomod LS1

VERIFIED SELLER
PENDING SALE
$64,999

The 1961 Chevrolet Impala is one of the most recognizable early-60s American coupes, known for its sweeping side trim, quad headlights, and jet-age design language. This example has been transformed into an LS-swapped restomod while retaining much of its original character inside and out. Finished in green with a white interior, the car features a recently installed LS1 V8 with approximately 94,601 miles on the engine. The firewall has been painted in candy apple red, highlighting the custom drivetrain installation, though the exterior paintwork remains unfinished and the seller has noted a quarter panel issue pending further documentation. Sitting on 22-inch wheels, this Impala blends classic styling with modern performance, presenting as a partially completed project with strong mechanical foundations.
