At a time when SUVs are increasingly designed to perform like sports cars, having a high-performance SUV alongside a supercar or sports car in your garage is a great addition. If you're searching for one that remains practical without sacrificing essential SUV qualities, the BMW X4 M should be at the top of your list. Introduced in 2019, the X4 M, like other BMW performance SUVs at the time, was more powerful than its understated design suggested. Its styling drew and still draws heavily from the X6 M, which had dominated the market for nearly a decade in 2019, resulting in similar compromises in the cabin due to the coupe-like design. But we'll cover the interior details later. First, let's look at what's under the hood of the 2021 BMW X4 M Competition.
Like the 2021 BMW M4 Competition, the 2021 X4 M Competition is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six rated at 503 horsepower and 479 lb.ft, which is a 30 horsepower gain over the 2021 BMW X4 M. That's good for a 0-60 mph time of 3.3 seconds which is impressive for a 4,400 pound SUV thanks to all-wheel-drive and a superb M-tuned suspension underneath. One advantage of buying the X4 M Competition is that it has a higher top speed, which, if you are brave enough to dare to reach it, maxes out at 177 mph. In contrast, the X4 M tops out at 155 mph. However, since it is electronically limited, the competition-spec X4 will likely do between 180 and 200 mph without the electronic limiter.
True to its M badge, the 2021 BMW X4 Competition Cabin is more performance-focused than purely inviting. But the bucket-style seats, even though they aren't as plush as, say, what you'd find in an X7, are comfortable and, most importantly, supportive. You can't resist driving the car spiritedly no matter how hard you resist and BMW knew that that's why you get them. Carbon fiber trims and contrasting stitching on the leather on the seats, door handles, and center console, among other surfaces, add an M character to the cabin. As expected of a BMW, the interior appointments are more than decent. Heated seats all around ensure every passenger is catered to. In highly specced examples, you might even find ventilated front seats and gesture infotainment display controls in addition to the standard features.
On the 2021 BMW X4 M Competition, aggressive design cues are everywhere yet to an untrained eye, it might seem like a regular X4 with an appearance package. The front bumper has a larger grille finished in black and with more aggressive vanes purposefully designed to allow more airflow to the engine. If that doesn't sell the car as an M, move towards the side. Here, you'll notice that the body lines are more sculpted and muscular, making the car look the part and improving aerodynamics. The front splitter and rear diffuser are also more pronounced, but it would have been nice if they had not been painted as carbon goes with any body finish, whether Alpine White, Black Sapphire Metallic, or Fire Red.
We might not mention every feature, but the 2021 BMW X4 M Competition has advanced technology that enhances performance, comfort, convenience, safety, and driver assistance. Thus making it a well-rounded, high-performance SUV. Inside, BMW took the instrument cluster like they've done with their recent releases. The 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is complemented by a 10.25-inch infotainment display, which also runs on BMW's iDrive, which offers detailed settings and configurations for both displays. Most of the interior offerings were included in optional packages, but the standard equipment were also comprehensive, including the heated seats we mentioned earlier, plus a memory function and electric adjustment for the front seats. In the driver assists and safety features suite, you get adaptive cruise control, parking assist, forward collision, warning, and automatic emergency braking, in addition to an expansive list of features we can't exhaust here. So, let's talk pricing.
If you bought one new, a 2021 BMW X4 M Competition would have easily set you back just shy of $100,000 especially if you ticked the boxes in the configurator. But if you're buying one today, you'll spend nearly half that as most examples in the market sell for around $60,000. If that convinces you to buy one, check out our BMW listings, where you will likely find a unit that matches your taste and preferences.
Sure, its coupe design may sacrifice some trunk space, and the suspension can be unforgiving, but besides those, we couldn't find any other flaws with the 2021 BMW X4 M Competition. It's visually captivating, fast and seats just the right amount of passengers. The second reason itself is enough to make one worth buying, and the rest come as bonuses.
