Background Story of this 1964 Ford Fairlane

Overview of 1964 Ford Fairlane For Sale by Owner

What’s this, the Ford Thunderbolt? Well, it’s a limited-production special of the Ford Fairlane 500 produced in 1964 exclusively for drag racing. Reportedly, only 100 cars were officially made, in manual and automatic transmission variants. One of them secured the 1964 NHRA Super Stock Championship for the Blue Oval. As you’d imagine, a proper Thunderbolt would be expensive, if you can find one at all. Thankfully, we’ve got the next best thing, a 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt Clone from New Ulm, Minnesota. This lovely tribute comes with the requisite 427 under the hood, and under 84,000 miles on the clock.

Exterior and Interior

Dressed in white, this 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt Clone is definitely not your average Fairlane 500. For starters, you’ll note the absence of the inner headlamps, designed to aid cooling of that massive engine. Then, the sizable air dam atop the hood comes into view. As the car’s side profile emerges, you’ll see its special Thunderbolt decals, as well as the drag-spec tires wrapped around silver alloy wheels. Yes, this car has purpose, and its purpose is to leap off the line as fast as possible. That’s why the interior of this 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt Clone is also heavily modified with a focus on racing. The rear seats have been ripped out to make space for the substantial roll cage that is necessary when competing in the quarter-mile shootout that this car is designed for. However, the dashboard and door cards remain largely stock to the Fairlane 500, which contributed to its being made into this tribute. The gear shifter, however, has been replaced with a drag special unit. Popping the trunk reveals a very cleanly painted space with the battery relocated here for better weight distribution as well as for safety reasons.

Engine

The monster 427ci V8 that powers this 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt Clone is ever ready to catapult it (and you) off the line with tenacious ferocity. It’s a side oiler, we’re told, and hooked up to a drag spec automatic gearbox. With rear-wheel drive, you’d better have your wits about you, as until those tires hook up, the only thing keeping you from sliding around is your brains and throttle pedal control.

1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL

VERIFIED SELLER
PENDING SALE
$19,500

Arguably the most popular Mercedes-Benz model in the United States during the Seventies and Eighties, The R107 era of their SL-Class grand tourer saw over 204,000 units find homes. This was during an 18-year production run that spanned 1971 to 1989. Impressive as the figure may be for a luxury car, it’s even more admirable when you consider that just over 300,000 were made in total! In fact, more R107 SLs found homes Stateside than they did in Germany or anywhere else in the world. Today, there’s no shortage of fine examples, thanks to the car’s superb Mercedes-Benz build quality. Hence, this Texas-based 1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SL is a rather sensible purchase to make, even if you have no idea about classic cars. With its 5.6-liter V8, 4-speed automatic gearbox and aftermarket Kenwood stereo unit, it’s a sound choice. Don’t worry about the 142,000 miles on the odometer, these cars are built to go the distance if maintained well.
