



To many, the name “Pontiac Firebird Trans Am” brings up mental images of Burt Reynolds ripping burnouts while Eastbound And Down plays in the background. “Trans Am” is a trim level in the Firebird model line, consisting of both performance and cosmetic upgrades over the standard car. The Firebird was a pony car based on the General Motors F body platform, competing with the Ford Mustang and the Mercury Cougar. 1979 saw the 2nd generation Firebird being significantly restyled, and a limited edition was offered to commemorate 10 years since the introduction of the 1969 Firebird Trans Am. 1979 was also the most successful year for the Firebird, selling over 210,000 units of which over 117,000 were Trans Ams. It was also the 1979 Daytona 500 pace car.

The design changes for 1979 included a more aerodynamic front end, a new rear spoiler and larger flares on the Trans Am, and a new single taillight across the Firebird range. While it is unclear whether this car’s color is original or was changed during the repainting, the gold paintwork certainly compliments the vehicle well. The iconic bird decal is present on the hood, as are the glass panels on the roof. The interior has been reupholstered and is a beautiful tan color that matches the exterior, with a matching 3-spoke steering wheel as well (one of the interior updates for 1979). The brushed metal back of the extensive instrument cluster has an aircraft-like appearance. The hood shaker does read “6.6” even though this car is not believed to have the 6.6L engine option. This car has air conditioning, power windows and a small modern radio unit (which blends well into the interior).

3 engine options were offered for 1979, including the 403ci V8 found in this car. It reportedly produced between 135 and 150 horsepower, which may not seem like much by modern standards, but it certainly sounded much better than most modern cars. A choice of a 4 speed Super T-10 manual or a 3 speed Turbo Hydramatic 350 automatic transmission were available, of which this car has the latter.
