Widely hailed as a technological tour de force of the Nineties, Mitsubishi’s 3000GT entered the US market in 1990, and was also badged as the Dodge Stealth. Featuring technological innovations such as four wheel drive, four wheel steering, and active aerodynamics on some variants, it turns heads even today. What we’ve got here is a chance to drive one of these Japanese grand tourers in the shape of a 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL, with just 63,000 miles on the clock. Given legendary Japanese reliability, you can be assured of many more years of trouble free motoring if maintained appropriately.
The looks of the 3000GT were positively futuristic in 1990, and have aged well, making this 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL still turn heads and catch eyes in its red paintwork, pop-up headlamps, retro styled silver five spoke Mitsubishi alloys, and of course quad tailpipes at the rear. This example appears to have been looked after very well, adding to its allure. Open a door to enter, and you’re treated to frameless doors, another Nineties signature that is very cool indeed. The cabin retains the original interior that offers seating for four occupants on fabric-upholstered seats, and comes with the latest technological toys for 1990. You’ve got automatic climate control, power windows, power mirrors, cruise control, and audio controls on the steering wheel which will have worked with the original stereo. However, a new Sony radio with Bluetooth and touchscreen functionality has been installed to bring things into the 21st century, but if you’re a purist, fret not as the seller is including the original radio with the sale. There’s some ample trunk space for your luggage beneath the glass liftback window, embodying the 3000GT’s role as a grand tourer.
This 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT SL packs a 3.0L DOHC V6 beneath its hood, installed in a transverse configuration, and driving the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine was rated for 222hp at 6,000rpm and 201lb-ft at 5,500rpm when new, and one could expect a zero to sixty time of around six seconds, with a top speed in the region of 140mph. The seller reports that the car has received a new air filter, and pictures indicate that it may be a K&N unit.
