The 928 was one of the first attempts Porsche made to include a luxury touring car into their arsenal of vehicles. By the late ’60s, the German auto manufacturer had already established themselves as one of the best in the business when it came to high-performance sports cars, but executives in the company — including owner Ferdinand Porsche himself — decided to take a different approach and replace its current flagship, the 911. The result was a touring car that had the power and personality of a sports car but felt comfortable and refined like a luxury sedan. It was named the 928, and one such cared-for example is available for sale today, located in Washington.
The exterior of the 928 comes in gloss black, and includes a protective ceramic coating. Its long front end conceals the car’s V8 engine. Porsche’s design was styled by Wolfgang Möbius, who included the design’s much-desired and iconic popup headlights. Indicator and fog lights were integrated onto the color-matched front bumper. The back is of hatchback-style, with the tail lamps integrated into the body, much like the front. This specimen sits on a set of brand new all-season tires. The well-preserved interior includes a black dash and tan interior. Also included are leather bucket seats, and a headliner that hosts a functioning sunroof. Some important functions include a converted AC that now uses new AC fluid, an All Kicker Stereo system, and speakers with an 8-inch Diamond Audio Subwoofer. The infotainment system is a Sony touch screen head unit inclusive of Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and is connected to the rear backup camera.
The 928 was honored by being Porsche’s first production car to host a V8 and is to date the only front-mounted V8 coupe that has ever been manufactured by the company. The all-original 5-liter engine produces almost 300hp to the rear wheels with all of its gaskets, seals, and spark plugs replaced. Oil changes have been performed and the car’s timing belts are in good condition. Other additions include a new battery, brakes that have been checked are fully functional, as well as a fully-rebuilt automatic transmission.
